Re: Saul Alvarez
Somebody mentioned Lara, I think he may have his hands full with that one. Alvarez reminds me of Ricky Hatton, in regards to his coming forward and very aggressive style..

Re: Saul Alvarez
Looks like he's got all the moves, but I'd like to see him in a fight where he's not dictating the pace, he was open mouthed after 3 rounds against Cintron, we'll know a lot more when he has to do 12 rounds at a hard pace.
Big at the weight too, I reckon he could step up.

Re: Saul Alvarez
i think when he is done he will be remembered as a great just for the amount of wins he will of racked up if nothing else. hes only 8 wins off Joe Calzaghes record dont forget and all at the age of 21! If he thought Mayweather or Martinez now i think that would be a mistake but at the age of 25 he will be unstoppable. (i know it will be to late for either of those fights then).
I'm a massive fan of his though him and Frampton are my favourites. his record means he must of been having on average at least 5 fights a year since he was fifteen. respect to Saul for that.

Re: Saul Alvarez
The thing is im sure lots of promoters can get a top level fighter hand pick them opponents at 5 fights a year for 15 years and say wow look at this.
Who has canelo actually fought that was supposed to give him a fight? Reality is if matthew hatton had had power at that weight he would have probably beat Alvarez. He's far too easy to hit and doesnt really have that much head and foot movement. I would hold off the "he's going to be the next Roberto Duran" hype until he actually gets a proper test.

Re: Saul Alvarez
I have just watched his two most recent fights against Kermit Cintron and Alfonso Gomez on Youtube and I have been impressed with what I saw. He takes his time to figure out his opponents to adapt the game plan accordingly he has got a good jab and fairly quickish hands and he has plenty of power as well and times his attacks quite well and is a good finisher when he has his opponent in trouble which he showed against Cintron, Gomez and Ryan Rhodes. As for putting Alvarez in with Floyd Mayweather, I think Mayweather will box Alavrez silly for 12 rounds as he is far too quick and slick for him and will just counter Alvarez for 12 rounds.

I want to see him in with Kirkland, it will probably only go 3 rounds, but its the best shoot-out match there is at the moment

Very good fighter. He is so composed and picks his punches so well.It will take an awful lot to beat him.
Re: Saul Alvarez
Agreed. World Chammpions should be striving for 4 title defences every year. Never mind this - defend once a year crap.Deno1986 wrote:It's great to see a fighter so active aswell. This was his fourth fight this year and he had five last year.

As for Kirkland, I would be astonished if such a high profile, relatively protected fighter as Alvarez (who gets every possible advantage over his opponents: Hatton was neither world-class nor a light-middle, Rhodes' fight was in his garden & RR about 2000 years old, Gomez neither world class nor a light-middle, Cintron coming off that thrashing by Carlos Molina) was put in with Kirkland. Alvarez would get smashed to bits, imo, & I don't think that much of Kirkland.
Canelo is good, but if he's ever going to be great we're going to have to wait until he moves far beyond the prospect stage (which is where he'd be at if he was fighting twenty years ago, he'd've had to fight John David Jackson or Gianfranco Rosi or someone like that for a belt & then we'd see what he was made of); at this rate I guess it means he'll be involved in something like a 50-50 fight by the Space Year 2339, at which time they'll tell us it's his mega-fight & he's already a superstar.
You used to have to beat someone relatively decent for a belt, in a fight in which you were not favoured, then you got to go around beating on postmen or cab drivers for a few years before either getting exposed or getting a really big fight. Nowadays you beat up a domestic-class fighter from a division below & keep fighting plausible yet non-competitive fights, & people don't notice. Weird.

Apart from Hernan Marquez the flyweight champion, not many, I'll grant you. But off the top of my head, thinking of guys who grabbed a title at a young age & had beaten better than Alvarez had by then:-damianhucker1 wrote:

Manny Pacquiao
Marco Antonio Barrera
Naz
Wilfred Benitez
Floyd Patterson
Carlos De Leon
Pipino Cuevas
Edwin Rosario
Hiroki Ioka
The point is not that he's not doing well for such a young age -- obviously he is, he's doing great -- but that he's being anointed as some sort of legend-in-the-making, when he hasn't been in a 50-50 fight yet. All I'm saying is let's leave the plaudits until the lad earns some, because it just seems that he's learning to walk & having loads of people congratulate him on how well he runs.

Re: Saul Alvarez
Datsue, i think you are being over-critical.
he is a huge star in the making, surely you can see that? All those people you have mentioned are great great fighters.....if they are the only people you can think off that have bettered him then he's in great company

Re: Saul Alvarez
that may just be overstating the case, thats all. sometimes a fighter being at a certain level age 20-21 is an indication of future greatness.Crazyboy wrote:

sometimes it's just an indicator of an early maturer/ early peaker (and one in a relatively poor era of talent, to boot). 'huge' star? Ali huge? De la Hoya huge? long, long way to go....
FTR DLH had beaten FAR better fighters before he'd got to 20 pro fights, Canelo doesn't have a Gennaro Hernandez or even a Ruelas on his record as yet. not even close to those guys that DLH had waxed in his 16th/17th fight.
Re: Saul Alvarez
maybe maybe.....we will see i suppose....i dunno i just see 'something' in him that i haven't seen for a while., killer instinct maybe....can't put me finger on it.Counter-puncher wrote:that may just be overstating the case, thats all. sometimes a fighter being at a certain level age 20-21 is an indication of future greatness.Crazyboy wrote:

Re: Saul Alvarez
Alvarez would test chinny Kirkland that's for sure and it would be a good fight as long as it lasted.
