Good boxing books?

just bought two cracking books off play.com one is barney ross and the other jack johnson and they only cost me £5.35 for the two and that includes postage,both hardbacks as well.

Hauser is such a hardcore Ali fanatic, though. I cant stomach most of his work.

Yup. He is featured in everything on TV involving Ali, and he just bugs me. No objectivity. Plus he repeats the exact same comments over and over in everything he is in.

Anyways, back on topic. I thought 'Facing Ali' was the best book I have read about Ali, because it is about the men he fought. We have heard every Ali story in the book, but this focused on 15 of his opponents.

The first story is on Tunney Hunsaker who was Ali's first opponent as a pro. Tunney was suffering from dementia when the writer went to visit him, but his wife helped tell his story. Apparently Ali visited Hunsaker's town and came to see him several years ago. Hunsaker's wife said Ali spoke very kindly and thanked him many times for being his first fight.

Those are the kind of stories I like to read. How many Tyson, Ali, Louis books and stories can you hear? I like the forgotten guys who are really what make this sport possible.

1) Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise & Fall Of Jack Johnson - Excellent book with some great insight & pictures.

2) Sugar Ray Leonard: The Big Fight - SRL was remarkably candid & honest & not as self indulgent as I thought he might me.

3) Sorcery At Caesers - A book about Leonard -v- Hagler; OK read; certainly worth picking up as it's not too pricey these days.

I thought it was an outstanding book and definately the best I've read about Ali or any other fighter for that matter.

I thought Bummy Davis vs Murder Inc book was a good read.

A Flame of Pure Fire: Jack Dempsey and the Roaring '20s was a good book too. If you like history of US at that time too.

One of my favorite boxing books is
WELCOME TO THE BIG TIME
by Earnie Shavers published in 2000.
Shavers wrote that book for real boxing fans and not for a general audience
that some boxers autobiographies seemed to be aimed at.
Shavers had said he loved to read boxing books himself ,especially autobiographies
when he spent weeks at training camps in his early days .

Rope Burns: Stories from the Corner by F.X. Toole

A book of six short stories that the movie Million Dollar Baby came from which for me was my least favorite story. The others were great.

Ive nevr heard of only entirely about D'Amato.
But if they do write a book on him I hope the author/historian ends the book
in the year 1977,because people get tired of reading the same olde sh*t
over and over.

I have a Harry Mullan book that was just a book of his favourite aticles, it was sent to me by Harry's brother Donnal. Had it for a while but never managed to quite get through it for one reason or another. Harry really shows up the boxing writers of today.

I would personally avoid all the quick, low grade cash in rubbish you would find in a WH Smith - i.e. Hatton, Khan, Calzaghe et al. Pulp nonsense.
