Most surprising fighters...good and bad
As the season winds down here, who do you think have been the biggest surprises and busts of the season?
How have your own fighters performed in comparison to your expectations?

Re: Most surprising fighters...good and bad
Joe Louis has been disappointing by all accounts. The success, the mismanagement... poor.
Maybe you could throw Ali's record in there too, but Kevo has never shirked from a fight and always managed admirably.
With me, I always knew Dempsey would be a contender and a HOF candidate. I wanted to take him to the next level though and believe I've done that by taking difficult fight after difficult fight - Dempsey's resume is second to none.
Also, I was well aware of The Juice's ability in comparison to the rest of the field. A talented fighter but obviously not one who's going to be consistently beating the top fighters. To make The Juice a world champion, have him near to the top of the rankings and achieve countless title fights; is a very good success story in my eyes.

Re: Most surprising fighters...good and bad
Joe Jeanette, Max Schmelling and Peter Jackson have proved to be very successful & deserving of their continous high positions.
Also Holmes, under Geto, has proved a very tough foe, after a slow start. Barry W with Jimmy Young has proved a handful. There are others but these are the ones I have tended to follow and been surprised by, on more than one occasion.
As for my fighters, well, the first time in The SIM and Moore had a mixed bag of results against both CPU / HP, averaging just over 0.500. Disappointing.
Liston, a little better but again lost a few I felt he should have won, suffering a few un-expected defeats. After the initial title shot vs Dempsey, has struggled to get back into contention. Just as he got in and around the Top 10, he would suffer another losss, setting him back.
Jack Sharkey, after a very, very poor start has strung together a few decent wins and has been making, slow progress but he has done ok recently.

Here's my take:tzyuforever wrote:As the season winds down here, who do you think have been the biggest surprises and busts of the season?
Successes:
Joe Jeanette - his WBU title reign was astonishing, it would have been interesting if he dropped out of the MDT and continued defending his title. Who knows how long he would have had it for?
Peter Jackson - he's won 6 WORLD TITLES! SIX!!! Never seen that coming, that's for sure...
Busts:
George Foreman - Big George has had moderate success. But really, I thought he would have been much more formidable than his performance have been this season.
Jersey Joe Walcott - I felt sure Jersey Joe would have won a World Title somwhere down the line, it's been a bit of a shcoker the fact that he's achieved so little this season.
My fighters:tzyuforever wrote:How have your own fighters performed in comparison to your expectations?
Joe Louis is a 4 time World Champion, who has fought the majority of the top competitors. He's been a succes this season - despiute propaganda by rival Managers trying to tarnish Joe's good name.
Ken Norton. I expected Ken to be around the top 20-25 and he has been this season. He had a lightning start but then inconsistency troubled him all the way through. I am a tad disappointed that he wasn't able to pick up a title along on his travels, but alas, cest la vie.
Re: Most surprising fighters...good and bad
Poor management? Joe is a 4 time World Champion and probably THE most ducked man in the sim, bar none.jBacca wrote:Joe Louis has been disappointing by all accounts. The success, the mismanagement... poor.
And he's taken on a multitude of top fighters... He's played his part in making this an etertaining season... What else can you expect of a simboxer than to take the hard fights?

Liston has done this with every HW season on record. He's always been very up and down and if I'm not mistaken has never won a world title. Pretty shocking given his rating.bengulnaci1 wrote:Liston, a little better but again lost a few I felt he should have won, suffering a few un-expected defeats. If I do another season, yes.Crease wrote:Will you be staying on as a Manger next season?tzyuforever wrote:As punching bags, admirably. As fighters, not so much.
Re: Most surprising fighters...good and bad
I think Jeannette has done a good job as has his nemesis, Max Schmeling. Larry Holmes has improved dramatically over the season. Jack Dempsey's WBO run was outstanding as has his season thus far been. Mike Tyson was a bit of a surprise, really performed well so far.
No dig intended at Crease, but Louis has underperformed big time. He never once successfully defended a title except the time where his manager selected Haye, Moore and Norton as his defenses for the WBO Title. Pre-season Louis was one of the top two fighters in the Heavyweights and titles were a given, but dominance of some sort was expected. His manager says he has fought the best opposition, but pick out someone that Jeannette hasn't fought that Louis has.

Re: Most surprising fighters...good and bad
Actually, if reports are to be believed, Louis, Ali & Marciano are all of an identical overrall rating, so if anything you could say top 3.Deno1986 wrote:Pre-season Louis was one of the top two fighters in the Heavyweights
I have come to learn in this Sim that NO-ONE is guaranteed a title. There is just too much ducking, politics and bullshite for the cream to always rise to the crop...Deno1986 wrote:and titles were a given
Joe Louis has always worked hard for his title shots and TWICE he was denied mandatory title shots because the champions fled rather than face Joe.
Deno1986 wrote:but dominance of some sort was expected.
Dominance? But I ask you, who has been dominant this season? Ali hasn't been dominant, nor has Dempsey although he has an impressive resume... And Marciano ran from Joe for weeks, and he's still running from Ali..
In short, NO-ONE has been dominant, that's why it's been such a great season.
Are we realkly going to go down this route again, I have already snared you once before...when disucssing this Jeanette's record vs Joe's record.Deno1986 wrote:His manager says he has fought the best opposition, but pick out someone that Jeannette hasn't fought that Louis has.

Re: Most surprising fighters...good and bad
Holyfield was never going to stand up to all the other big names this season, so i had to get him a title shot early, even if i had to fight CPU fighters to get a decent ranking. Thanks to P4P1 for our first title shot, which Charles got himself DQ'd against Holyfield, followed by 2 successful title defences. It would be a different story for Holyfield if this was a cruiserweight season.
Tua was just shit, his best win was probably KO'ing Sonny Liston...

Re: Most surprising fighters...good and bad
If you look at Listons record, as I said its bizaere. Some of the best and worst:
Worst
Week 2 - Draw Riddick Bowe
Week 3 - L TKO3 Mike Tyson (Ahead but stopped on a cut)
Week 16 - L KO7 David Tua
Week 26 - L UD Vitali Klitschko
Best
Week 5 - W TKO8 Larry Holmes
Week 11 - W TKO5 Muhammad Ali
Week 18 - W TKO6 Joe Frazier
Week 28 - W TKO 8 Peter Jackson (Cuts)
Like I said. Bizaere, although TF has kind of explained it somewhat.
Thanks Commish

Re: Most surprising fighters...good and bad
I'm going to throw Stribling out there as the most unlucky.
Since his week 1 loss to A-Force
he has only been convincingly defeated twice. (by Jack Dempsey in W8 and Joe Frazier in W27). He has lost 3 times by SD, 4 times by injury and once by DQ. And, he has failed in 7 World Title fights.
Thanks for everyone mentioning Schmeling. He's got a great run in the middle of the season and got some big wins in TMDT

The well calibrated and perfectly objective software is the perfect view to the facts of the matter. One need look no further than that particular assessment to know all one needs to know of this spectacular season.
We predict that Corbett will likely end up at the end of this season as the champion. Admittedly he is having a slow start, but is about to make his move. He's been very distraught at his loss to Norton, and has been depressed as a result. But he's in a 12 step program and making strides overcoming his depression.

My fighters have not been very good, but I started late and did not have a great list to chose from. Ingo does have a few decent wins on the season including a KO1 win over Joe Jeannette and wins over Ken Norton, Floyd Patterson, James Corbett and Max Baer.

Ingo's "win" over Corbett was a complete sham. I can't see how you can even mention it here. Next week he will avenge this loss....(Unless Crease slithers out from under his rock and will allow Norton to take a beating). You think your record is bad now....wait till next week. Corbett will face either of your lackies.

"Snared me"?Crease wrote: Are we realkly going to go down this route again, I have already snared you once before...when disucssing this Jeanette's record vs Joe's record.
Jeannette's record is better than Louis's is. At least my boy could defend a title without picking handy opponents.
Joe Jeannette's notable wins:
George Foreman X2
Lennox Lewis
Wlad Klitschko X2
Harry Wills
Larry Holmes
Joe Louis (TKO9)
Muhammed Ali
Vitali Klitschko
Draw vs. Max Schmeling and Jack Dempsey
Joe Louis's Notable Wins:
Vitali Klitschko
Joe Jeannette (UD)
Sonny Liston
James Jeffries
Mike Tyson
Jack Dempsey
George Foreman
Joe Frazier

Re: Most surprising fighters...good and bad
Ya know Deno, Joe is the ONLY fighter of all the fighters THE ROCK has faced that he did NOT KO.
That's saying a mouthful......of teeth, since he got to keep them.

Re: Most surprising fighters...good and bad
Charles shocked me at the beginning of the season having such a great run until he met the rock then it was all downhill from there

You are right. It was Vitali he fought in Week 29.DetroitHxC wrote:Jeanette has only fought Wlad twice.Deno1986 wrote: Wlad Klitschko X3

Despite all he's achieved, Ali has been a disappontment this season. Think his main problem has been his chin. Still, with a strong finish to the season he'll be knocking on the door of the HoF.

Doy uo think so? Ali is a multiple World Champion, Million Dollar Tournament Champion & has been a consistent top 5 fighter and has a tremendously good win percentage ratio.
What did you expect?
(not having a pop, just enquiring).
