Not disputing Murray landed more punches but I wouldn't trust compubox as the be all end all with regards to punch stats. For example, in the recent barnburner between Angulo and Kirkland, compubox had Angulo throwing 73 punches in the first when in reality he threw far more than that. Also, as KG states, you can't quantify the number of quality punches landed. Scoring is a very subjective art. One thing I would like to see is consistency with scoring. It would seem many judges have different criteria when comes to scoring a fight.

Fighter A could hugely outland Fighter B in rounds one, two and three then be edged out on punches landed for the other 9 rounds.

The total could show fighter A landed more over the course of the fight BUT he was outworked in three quarter of the rounds.

Punch Stats - unless broken down round by round mean nothing and even then they do not show impact, power, force or quality of shot

They werent tip tap, Murray punches very solid check sturms face at the press conference to Martins his tip taps are very strong shots he had a serious amount of swelling and above his left eye a huge welt, he outworked Sturm

Not saying that Martin doesn’t hit hard in general, just felt that on the night some of his shots were thrown to place heavier follow on shots but the heavier shots didn’t always land flush when compared to Sturm’s punching.

Good fight, I thought it would be straightforward on the cards so was surprised with the draw, and shocked there’s not been more stuff put out about it since it happened to raise Martin’s profile in the way it did Macklin’s. Then again, a lot of boxing has taken place since Friday and it is still early in the week.

I agree, he was mixing in hard shots amongst much softer ones in my opinion, which there is nothing wrong with, it's a good tactic, but goes to show that punch stats are useless when trying to determine the winner in a fight.

I scored it a draw or maybe Strum by 1, Jim Watt scored it a draw (lets ignore the fact he scored the last round even when it was anything but), and the judges together made it a draw. Good even fight gets a decent outcome, lets all be happy!

it is a shame that there has been less outcry with murray. interestingly, both of sturm's close/controversial results this year took place on a busy weekend. i think macklin v sturm was the same weekend as a close fight involving devon alexander, so macklin didn't even get "robbery of the week".

reckon murray did superbly, and that he'll probably turn up as an opponent for one of the more solid, less glamorous champs - perhaps pirog.


on another subjwct, i'm not one to push for macklin v murray v barker - they all have the right to follow their career path and take the biggest opportunity at world level. though it seems barker v chavez jr is a no go, if the WBC are going to make chavez jr face martinez (unless jr can squeeze in another title defense). i badly want martinez v barker - an attractive, exciting matchup.

Weird to see such a punch stats discrepancy... for what it's worth, I didn't see anybody from compubox there - obviously as host broadcaster Sat 1 were.
