1630 BOXING: Russian light heavyweight Roman Simakov, who was carried from the ring on a stretcher after being knocked out in a WBC Asian Boxing Council title fight on Monday, has died. Simakov was knocked down in the sixth round by compatriot Sergei Kovalev but got up and continued before being knocked out a round later. He had brain surgery but never regained consciousness.

RIP. On the other side of this it is not Kovalev's fault. Hope he continues his career free of guilt unlike our own Benn & Eubank.

So, in your opinion, a guy who repeatedly punches another guy in the head, with every intention of doing him harm, is in no way responsible for any of the injuries his punches inflict? I find that utterly illogical.
My point was he didn't have to be tere in the first place....HIS decision no one elses.

However its bringing thread down by argueing so we'll agree to disagree i think...again...RIP

Boxing is a dangerous sport but so is skiing, motorsport and climbing mountains etc. Its the chance you take to enjoy your chosen sport. Thankfully we dont have too many bad boxing accidents these days especially in the UK. Sometimes we complain that fights are stopped too early but if a ref sees a fighter has suffered too many heavy blows to the head its far safer to stop the fight to avoid serious injury or even death. Its the nature of the sport to hurt or knock out your opponent so sadly bad things will happen from time to time. No boxer can be blamed when things go wrong, they are in there to win. They are all brave people because every fighter knows the potential consequences. This news is very sad. RIP

MachoMan09 wrote:I firmly believe there is a marked difference between 'blaming' oneself for another person's death and 'accepting' responsibility for the part you played in it. Being willing and able to do the latter is the healthiest way of dealing with something that can have an seriously detrimental impact on your life. Trying to convince yourself that 'it wasn't my fault' doesn't work. Far better to rationalise that 'I was responsible but this is why...and I'm good with that'.

This makes more sense than saying it was partly his fault. It wasnt in any way his fault he did not try and kill him and at no point was it his intention to do so. Saying things like that are just ridiculous you say about "does anyone actually take time to think about the fighter that died" but you clearly haven't thought about the guy that has done this to a fellow sportsman. He has to live the rest of his life knowing that he was in a fight that ended with his opponent dying. Yes it was his punches that caused the damage and yes he was trying to render his opponent unconscious but it doesn't make it his fault in any way. As stated it is our choice to get in the ring we know the risks and we decide to put our lives on the line for our love of the game we chose to play. Some of the things you have said in this thread make me wonder if your on the wrong forum. I'm sure there is forums for golf, football or even chess perhaps that would be more appealing to you. Someone mentioned that the arguing is bringing the thread down but I feel you have to expect it on such a thread as there is always someone who is going to try and be different to try and split opinions although I think in this case you are greatly outnumbered on views. I fought 2 weeks ago and stopped the guy in the first round I felt terrible after as the guy needed urgent attention from paramedics thankfully he was fine afterwards but like I said I felt awful after. My thoughts are with the guy who dieds family but also with the other fighter in what must be an horrendous time he is going through. Nuff said hopefully we don't hear of anything like this ever again.

Fascinating stuff. I honestly can't disagree with what Macho says, he is looking at things from a wider perspective. Perhaps one that a person can only afford once the fighting, in the ring or otherwise, is finished - as in you will never do it again and you know that?

Fully appreciate Woody's stance also. He is a current combatant and to have Macho's perspective at this point in time, I imagine, could be highly destructive to the effectiveness of a fighter in any walk of life, be it boxing, soldiering, whatever.

I wouldn't know because I haven't been there personally, but it's definitely got me thinking about things I have done where a person could easily have died and my intents and purposes at the time of the incidents would not have been to kill, but certainly were to do some sort of damage - no question. But the damage I was looking to do would have been far more like a boxer's, ie take the person out of the game short term, enough for me to have beaten them. That said, what possible control could I have had over the degree of damage really? And did I think 'this person could die?' never, not at point of attack anyway - obviously in a street/football terrace scenario there is the option to back off, so to speak, recognise when you have gone far enough. This definitely does not strike me as being the case for a soldier. And boxers are conditioned to keep going until a third party intervenes.

Don't actually know where I'm going here so I'll stop, but the thread definitely has got me thinking - and feeling exceptionally grateful I haven't got someone's death on my hands, which I could swear on everything that matters to me would not have been my intention, yet actions would speak louder than words.

There may be truth in what Macho has said, I dont know

However, did it really need to be said, why the need for a debate??

A man has died thats all that matters.

Interesting and painful thread. I sent my son to play rugby, knowing that it's a dangerous sport which, in a few cases, results in players being maimed or killed. If my son had been seriously hurt would it be my fault, either wholly or partly? I don't think so, even though I'm sure I would feel guilty.

Boxers don't, I believe, set out to do their opponents lasting harm, they just want to win. In the vast majority of cases boxers carry on their lives without lasting effects from their matches, or at least fewer than someone who gets plastered down the local every night. A serious brain injury resulting in long term impairment or death is an extremely rare event in boxing, so I think it's wrong to suggest it's an inevitable or common outcome, despite the fact that the head is the target. So I would call a ring death like this one an accident, and as such, the boxer who caused the injury should not be blamed for it.

As to the "I'm sure there is forums for golf, football or even chess perhaps that would be more appealing to you" jibe. Don't be a dick.

Lol I understand what your saying it's just the way you put it a first seemed very callous and uncalled for but as you have explained. I now completely see where your coming from

Very unfortunate and my thoughts go out to all involved.

on a different note, some of the comments and discussion in this thread epitofy how truly excellent this forum can be, no malice, just pure and thoughtful debate on a very sensitive subject.
