Henry Wharton v Ray Close

Post by Roco »

Saw Wharton stop a young Close in the 1st round in an England v Ireland amateur bout.

However, Close did seemingly well against Eubank in a couple of good performances.

What would have happened had these 2 met in the pro ranks in their primes?

Wharton to stop Ray late. Though Close was underrated. This is a guy who went to Italy to win a European Title by KO against a future "World Champion". Workmanlike, humble guy who came gave Eubank fits in their first fight.

Would you argue that Close did better against Eubank than Wharton?

I think Reid also beat Joe Calzaghe but then again Calzaghe spent 10 years defending a nothing title at home vs mediocrities. Yes he beat Kessler but nobody is calling Andre Ward an all time great for rolling over Kessler and the Hopkins win is debatable at best. Calazghe's 46-0 is one of the most dubious undefeated records I have ever seen.

Wharton stops Close in the middle rounds.

I also agree, that Reid beat Calzaghe by a couple of rounds. At worst, Reid deserved a draw; just a pity it never happened as a re-match would have been a real war.

There is no argument Close did much better against Eubank than Wharton.Though it must said Eubank was brilliant the night he beat Wharton. He showed more respect for Wharton than he did for Ray and fought out of his skin.
