R J Jnr
I noticed he won the vacant ubo intercontinental cruiserweight title over the weekend !
I know the belt is meaningless and he beat someone who hadn't won in 7 fights, but the guys a legend, he must have millions in the bank so is he just doing it for the love of it ?
His one of my favorite fighters of all time and IMO one of the greatest too, I just hope he finishes soon ! Does anyone believe he can still win a genuine world title ?

no, at least I don't think so. And according to several sources his debt problems meant that he didn't get to pocket any money for the rematch with Hopkinsjessi wrote:I noticed he won the vacant ubo intercontinental cruiserweight title over the weekend !

And I would be extremely surprised if he won a legit world tite.
Re: R J Jnr
I never knew that, I still can't understand why so many boxers owe huge tax bills, they know exactly what there getting so there for should know exactly what to put aside. It's a shame he still has to fight after everything his done in his career.crusader wrote:no, at least I don't think so. Without being disrespectful, I would have thought that a high percentage of proffesional boxers are not exactly clued up on finances and how to protect/manage money.jessi wrote:I never knew that, I still can't understand why so many boxers owe huge tax bills, they know exactly what there getting so there for should know exactly what to put aside. I was really hoping he'd get the win then retire, but he's now talking of fighting Tarver again.
Re: R J Jnr
The Universal Boxing Organisation Intercontinental Cruiserweight title and an opponent that last won in 2007 and last fought in 2009. Why oh why is Roy Jones still fighting?
Well, apart from trying to earn a bit of money but I doubt he's earning millions in these kind of fights.

Re: R J Jnr
After seeing enough clips of it, only match that makes any sense would be something of a senior tour with Toney or Evander Holyfield.
Its a sad watch really, not sure who is most shot out of the three.

Why oh why do they always end up oweing huge chunks of money !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't they know about the difference between Gross and net pay ??
If you arn say 1 miliion for a fight, surely there is an accountant who can say "Well Roy, roughly speaking you will need to pay the tax man about 250,000 dollars, so that means you can only spend 750,000 dollars or put to one side 250,000 dollars "
Then when the taxman knocks at your door you can say..............." Here is your 250,000 that i roughly owe you"
HOW fornicating HARD IS THAT
They either must not give a shit, have been swindled by accountants or just be really really thick people

It happens time and time again, no matter who the boxer is it seems. How can Roy be skint? He was on a minimum guarantee of $10 million for the Ruiz fight and throw all the other massive paydays and sponsorships and will have made a fortune. I saw his house on cribs and was ludicrously big with a full size basketball auditaurium!!
For every Lennox, Hopkins, Oscar etc there's a Tyson, Holyfield and RJJ. My personal predictions are that Pac and Mayweather will be skint by 2020 - Pac fleeced by all the hangers on and Mayweather "investing" in useless rappers and every other fly by night operation that will guarantee to quadruple his money.

Maybe Roy invested the money and the businesses that he invested in didn't pay the right amount of tax. In my opinion if you are earning fortunes like Roy Jones once did, just put it in the bank and live off the proceeds, it's really simple. If you bank say 30 million over a career and may your tax correctly, you should still have around 20 million plus the interest made, which should do you for the rest of your life. It could also be divorce cases and alimony, because apparently Holyfield has been clobbered that way.
Re: R J Jnr
the system is a lot more complex in the states. and the problem is in most cases outside the promoters and managers the fighter often is the last to know what he is getting. Often accountants and lawyers in the states are bent too. Its not like england. Look at how many lawyers in the states like mike trainer used to get involved in boxing management to make money. Wouldnt suprise me if RJJ thought his taxes had been paid and they werent and u have to remmeber the tax regime in the USA is incredibly harsh. Often $3 million unpaid in a fight in 1998 will have become $11 million unpaid with interest added on in 2011. Thats part of how Tyson got screwed. RJJ is a much more in control intelligent with his finances guy than Tyson was, and so is Holy but sometimes things like divorces and alimony screw them too. Take Holyfield and RJJJ they own sprawling humungous mansions....just to heat and light those places costs millions a year. Holy really had no sense building a 39 bedroom HOTEL as his home and than getting divorced and having so many kids like the hypocrite heathen he is.jessi wrote:I never knew that, I still can't understand why so many boxers owe huge tax bills, they know exactly what there getting so there for should know exactly what to put aside. The saddest thing about the fight, more so than Jones' poor performance, the shitty belts and the dire opposition, was seeing one of the biggest attractions of the past 20 years performing in front of about 500 people in a nightclub, "televised" online with production standards no better than some smalltown wrestling promotion.

I agree it's a sad state of affairs, but on the same hand if it was at York hall I'd pay to watch him, his still a legend and personally my favorite !oliverfennell wrote:The saddest thing about the fight, more so than Jones' poor performance, the shitty belts and the dire opposition, was seeing one of the biggest attractions of the past 20 years performing in front of about 500 people in a nightclub, "televised" online with production standards no better than some smalltown wrestling promotion.

Yes but if he was on at York Hall he'd at least be broadcast on Sky Sports. The whole thing on Saturday night was embarassingly shoddy, from the camerwork to the sound editing to the commentary and even the MC.jessi wrote:I agree it's a sad state of affairs, but on the same hand if it was at York hall I'd pay to watch him, his still a legend and personally my favorite !oliverfennell wrote:The saddest thing about the fight, more so than Jones' poor performance, the shitty belts and the dire opposition, was seeing one of the biggest attractions of the past 20 years performing in front of about 500 people in a nightclub, "televised" online with production standards no better than some smalltown wrestling promotion.
Re: R J Jnr
Was it available on some US PPV channel as well as online, Oliver? I thought it was on some one of these obscure PPV's that US TV sometimes has (ala Holyfield vs Botha).

I expect Jones' opponent is first choice substitute if Nathan Cleverly's next opponent pulls out.

I don't think so. I saw a copy of it the next day and RJJ was talking about why he was fighting on uStream, so fans all over the world could see it. Right, not because the TV networks turned it down...stujones wrote:Was it available on some US PPV channel as well as online, Oliver? Re: R J Jnr
I agree it's very sad to see him fall this far. I mean, to sell the Lacy fight he resorted to wearing a pirate's outfit, for eff's sake. He's become a parody of his former self.
The whole thing smacks of people taking advantage of him. Not just the tax business, where he's clearly been ripped off by people who should be trustworthy, but by people who continue to promote him when it risks his health. I know he's a grown man and can make his own decisions & all that, but if I was someone close to him and genuinely cared about him, I would sit him down and say "Roy. That KO vs Lebedev was scary. It's time to pack it in."

Re: R J Jnr
It amazes me following his earlier career that he would continue into his 40's. I always thought he would know when it is time. However, it is clear he is as deluded as the likes of Evander etc.
The Lebedev KO was bad enough, arguably worst was the Glen Johnson one - thats when he should have packed it in. His performance and attitude in the build up, preperation and actual fight vs Calzaghe was poor really. That was the only ever 24/7 series that all my non massive boxing fans mates went "This Jones doesn't stand a chance" - not because of Welsh bias or being pro-Calzaghe to the extreme, but actually because Roy seemed to be focused on play sparring with his fat mate as a major source of his training.

I remember in the previews to the Cesar Gonzalez fight in 2001 Jones being adamant he must retire at 35, there was no doubt in his mind.
Had he followed that, he'd have retired in 2003 at heavyweight having outfoxed John Ruiz. IMAGINE how he would be perceived today...
Had he just put his money aside for tax and lived off the interest from savings account he could be loaded. Why fighters invest huge chunks in these businesses is beyond me.

Yep. I remember Claude Abrams calling him the greatest of all time after that win. People ridicule that statement now but it didn't look unrealistic at the time. If he'd have retired then, people would have been SCREAMING for him to come back the whole time from then until now. He would have been touted as the conqueror of everyone from Lewis to the Klitschkos. Don't believe me? Look at the love Ike Ibeabuchi gets even to this day.loaded_gloves wrote:I remember in the previews to the Cesar Gonzalez fight in 2001 Jones being adamant he must retire at 35, there was no doubt in his mind.

Re: R J Jnr
Yes, as far as i know he is suffering from money issues.
His bout with Hopkins earned him little to money since the initial chunk of revenue was to go to Hopkins, then it would be 50:50. That bout didn't make much money anyway was Hopkins walked away with a huge payday, but there was nothing left over for RJJ.
Ironic, RJJ was hated because of his cushy HBO contract and making millions fighting questionable opposition at times.
Now he is allegedly skint, and his rival Hopkins is one of the few boxers in the business to have made and invest millions upon millions and not lose it like others.

All this nonsense about 'he never had the fundamentals' absolute shizzer!!
When he wanted he had a great jab, hook, uppercut, body shots , staight right, hook off the jab, freaky speed & power.
he barley lost a round untill Griffin and then stroyed him in 1 in the rematch.
Hell Jones Jnr was supernatural and would have beaten any man at his weight in history.

I loved Roy Jones growing up but when you look back now he never was the linear champ in any division ,he avoided the linear champions at LHW and HW ,You cant get from the fact these are facts that damage his resume .
