Calzaghe v Evans Ashira next month

Post by nickd »

Apparently Evans Ashira is the man for next months fight.

This is a very poor matchup, an all too familiar story.

This guys a middleweight and was KO'd in 2 by Masoe last year. Great credentials.

That's an appalling match. It can't be true.

I think you are underestimating Ashira a bit here, IMO he is pretty good and have some good wins.

The KO 2 against a Middleweight is bad form.

Its in the same bracket as McIntyre, Pudwill, that Mger fella, Jiminez etc etc.

And he's 35 years old. I agree Stu he's no better than those guys. At 160 perhaps, but at 168 he is way out of his depth.

While I wasn't expecting a unification fight next month before the 'agreed' fight with Lacy, this is a shit match then again what do I really expect with Calzaghe?.....

Did you get this from a decent source, Nick?

IF this is true...what a load of fornicating shite. But it might not be true, of course.

But IF it is, they'll be trying to sell the fight with Adam Smith growling: "Ashira, the African WARRIOR narrowly beaten in a legendary slugfest for the WORLD title...Ashira, the man who DESTROYED Jerry Elliott - something Howard Eastman and Brian Magee FAILED to do...Evans, the WRECKER of unbeaten records - in his most recent fight he HAMMERED highly touted American Quentin Smith who had racked up 21 straight wins. With only one loss in his whole CAREER and two great nations behind him, Ashira is COMING to Cardiff and will accept nothing less than VICTORY!"

In truth, another protected Danish-based fighter somehow engineered towards a WBA title shot at 160 and was destroyed in less than four minutes. Quentin Smith's previous opponent was a certain Reggie Strickland. A total and utter load of shite.

Say it ain't so, Joe. Or maybe an announcement can be made on who he actually will be fighting to stop all the speculation? World title fights, in the pipeline for ages, less than a month away, still TBA. Not on.

Oh dear. I've just looked and Ashira has somehow - despite never having ONE meaningful contest at super-middle has somehow made it to number 10 in the WBO rankings at 168. One above Carl Froch.

Sometimes this sport makes me sick to my stomach.

Ashira was being talked about as a prospect at one time, but that was at MIDDLEWEIGHT.

I've not heard fornicate all about him for a while and he got stiffed by Maselino Masoe.

If Calzaghe wanted a tune-up why not have a tune-up against a genuine super middleweight. I cannot see how a middleweight will prepare him.

Sounds like it will maybe be a glorified sparring session for Joe, who probably just wants to sharpen up his reflexes a bit.

The stoppage win over Elliot is surprising though, Elliot is normally pretty durable and he's a big muthafucker too, maybe Masoe can punch a bit.

Quite right though Ian, that is exactly the sort of drivel I would expect them to spout in the fight buildup with a montage of Ashira knocking over hapless bums.

I too couldn't help notice that his last opponent was an absolute pigeon who was built up on facing stiffs of the highest order.

I can feel my cynicism boiling up, would you really face someone as piss poor as this in preparation for Lacy, but then again, I suppose Reid did face Ramdane Serjane, but look what happened when he got in the ring.

Lacy, Calzaghe agree to meet Nov.5

JOHN C. COTEY

After beating Robin Reid Saturday in Tampa, IBF super-middleweight champ Jeff Lacy has his sights set on WBO champ Joe Calzaghe in Wales.

By Times Staff
Published August 9, 2005

The only thing standing between IBF super-middleweight champion Jeff Lacy and WBO champ Joe Calzaghe is little known fighter Evans Ashira .

Promoters Gary Shaw and allegedly agreed Monday morning that St. Petersburg's Lacy and Calzaghe will fight Nov. 5 in Wales, provided Calzaghe beats Ashira on Sept. 10.

"Frank told me if Joe wins that fight, our fight Nov. 5 is on," Shaw said.

Shaw said he brought up the possibility of holding the fight in the Tampa Bay area, but "once Warren got off the floor, he mentioned a 22,000-seat arena" he preferred in Wales.

The official announcement is scheduled for Monday, Shaw said.

Calzaghe (39-0, 31 knockouts) has been talking up the Lacy matchup with the British media. The Newbridge, Wales, resident said he watched the seven-round destruction of former opponent Robin Reid Saturday night and was impressed.

"I'm delighted that Lacy won and is still undefeated to set up our showdown in November in what will be a real super-fight," the 32-year-old Calzaghe told sportinglife.com.

"That was probably Lacy's best performance yet and impressed me, but it's hard to say how good Lacy is because Reid was so poor.

"Reid is past it and I'm glad he didn't win because it would be a case of going over old ground if we had to meet again and I wouldn't have been as up for it as I would have for a fight against Lacy."

The 5-foot-111/2 left-hander became boxing's longest reigning champion after Bernard Hopkins lost to Jermain Taylor last month. He won his WBO belt in 1997 by beating Chris Eubank , and has defended his title 15 times.

But he has been criticized for fighting weak competition to protect his status, and has ventured out of Britain for a fight three times in his career. He has never fought in the United States.

According to reports, he is eager for what will be his career-defining fight against Lacy, 20-0 with 16 knockouts.

"I have the style to destroy Lacy," Calzaghe told the London Sun . "With my hand speed, he would not know where the punches were coming from. Lacy is a good fighter, but he is predictable and he gets hurt with the shots he takes. I'm awkward and I throw punches at all different angles. I have fought people like Lacy before but he always does the same thing. Me? I can change my style and give him nightmares."

Despite the skeptics, Shaw is confident Calzaghe won't pull out of the fight, like he did twice against Glen Johnson last summer because of a back injury. The reason?

"Because this is Calzaghe's biggest fight ever at 168," he said. "It's his biggest fight. What's he going to do? Fight ( Sven ) Ottke or ( Mikkel ) Kessler or Danny Green ? Jeff Lacy is bringing the bags of money with him."

MEMORY LOSS: Reid is still claiming Lacy never hurt him - apparently he doesn't remember the right uppercut in the seventh round that turned his eyeballs into a slot machine display - and not surprisingly picks Calzaghe to beat Lacy.

"I've fought both and I can tell you, Calzaghe's hand speed is far superior to Lacy's," Reid told the Sun. "Joe will also be much too strong for Lacy. I was surprised how I could easily push Lacy around the ring. For all his reputation, Lacy is nowhere near as strong as Joe and will get beat inside the distance."

Reid, who had not been knocked down in a 43-fight career before falling four times Saturday, picked himself over Lacy, by the way.

BACK-TO-BACK: So far this year, underdog Winky Wright thoroughly beat Felix Trinidad , and Lacy defended his IBF title twice, with seventh-round technical knockouts - and looked vastly improved from fight to fight.

It's safe to say Dan Birmingham has to be the leader in the clubhouse for a second straight Trainer of the Year Award from the Boxing Writers Association of America, with two big fights involving Wright and Lacy to come.

To be honest, I didn't except any better. Its just a payday (maybe final decent payday) before Joe fights his first meaningful test in years.

As long as Joe fights Lacy in Novemeber, I don't care if it is Evans Ashira or Ieuan Evans in the ring in September.

Thats a big IF though in my book. Much as Calzaghe is giving it all the talk about wanting to fight Lacy, I seem to recall approaching the Johnson fight it was his dream to be a 2 weight world champion, now its his dream to beat a guy who is 20-0!! I'll believe it when I see them facing off for the pre fight instructions.

Thanks, Nick and James.

That seems a very reliable source. IF THIS IS TRUE, very strange how Floridians get to know about Calzaghe's opponent before the people who are expected to roll up and buy tickets.

Nick

Who has Wright got lined up. Looks like he will be out of the Middleweight title picture for the immediate future - Hopkins vs Taylor II is pencilled in for Decemeber.

Who is Wright fighting?

Well, with all due respect Stu, anyone who cares about the sport and it's future should be bothered about matches like this. I can't even be arsed to go into why. You are clever enough to work it out for yourself.

This fight will show Calzaghe knocking over a guy 24 and 1 to the ITV viewers. That is all that matters from the business standpoint.

The fact he's also an inactive, 35 year old, bloated light-middleweight with a padded record, who will be completely unprepared for fighitng in front of a British crowd, is of no real interest to the casual Joe.

However, this NAFF match is par for the course with regard Calzaghe's recent history, so it's hard to be surprised. It wouldn't even be surprising if, somehow, this fight goes ahead but the Lacy fight falls through. That would be the icing on the cake for another glorious year in Calzaghe's 'reign'.
