LOL @ Gary Stretch

Post by oliverfennell »

A while ago, upon hearing Gary Stretch was in Thailand, I thought I'd track him down for an interview. I didn't have a commission but thought the obvious likes of Boxing News or Monthly might be interested, and/or the newspaper I work for, the Bangkok Post.

Well, he's now an actor and apparently the success of this giddy profession went to his head and he knocked back my interview request, saying he "only speaks to big titles".

No doubt Esquire, GQ, Playboy, the New York Times and the like will be beating down his door to speak to him when they see the kinds of films he doesn't even have the lead role in.

Dead mans shoes is a colossally shit film, beyond shit actually.... If a piece of shit had bowel function and did a shit, well that shit is no where near as shit as that film. You'd need to go to the shits 5th or 6th descendant to equalise the shitness.

From imdb......

Mini Biography
During the early nineties, Gary Stretch was the glamor-boy of British boxing. His good looks coupled with KO power in his fists ensured he was big box-office. He also made money strutting his stuff on the catwalk as a male model. Some said he earned more as a model than actually fighting, and his appearances in the British tabloid newspapers made sure that he was never out of the headlines. Despite winning the British light-middleweight championship, his big moment undoubtedly came in 1991 when he challenged Chris Eubank for the WBO world middleweight championship in London. "Beauty V The Best" attracted the big celebrity crowd, and it was a major sporting event. Despite not really training for the contest, he gave the iron-chinned champion hell for five rounds before very controversially the fight was stopped in the sixth round. After many unsuccessful attempts for a rematch, Stretch had one more fight then retired. Ultimately, the lure of Tinseltown proved too much and he is currently dividing his time between LA & the UK. In 2004, his hard work finally paid off when he was cast as psychotic gangster "Sonny" in Shane Meadows' gritty cult thriller Dead Man's Shoes (2004). Stretch received a BIFA nomination alongside another British talent, Paddy Considine. This picture finally earned Gary the recognition he craved and deserved. He went on to co star opposite Colin Farrell, Angelina Jolie and Sir Anthony Hopkins in the Oliver Stone blockbuster Alexander (2004).

Call me a sadist but that wasn't the most controversial stoppage I've seen. Good fighter he was though.

Can't say I'm surprised he didn't give you an interview, he always came across as a bit of an arrogant ****. Surely with all the great fighters in Thailand Gary Stretch wouldn't have been much of coup anyway?

Well, no, not fussed really but I was just surprised with his "only big titles" response, like he's some Hollywood A-lister. And then I read about that Shark/Croc movie today and had to laugh when I saw who the second-billed actor was. Big time.

Gary Stretch is a legend who can have any famous girl he wants, even Chrissie Hynde who's just shy of her two hundredth birthday. He murdered Chris Eubank when they fought, winning every round with his superior boxing skills until he mysteriously disappeared through the ropes.

how on earth could that be labelled a very controversial stoppage? The guy fell through the ropes and had no balance on standing up

Robert Picardo? Didn't he play the holographic doctor in DSP 9? Now if they had Seven of Nine in it, we would all be winners.

'Last I heard' it happened around 1987 - probably before Quixall was born! :TU:

It appeared on this British forum a few years back, a thread was made, so you might be able to locate it !!

I think it may have come from this artricle

Edit = This must be another "Chippie" moment, the story i heard was the one from the post below :TU:

It's a quality story from a good while back.

Version I heard is that Narcissus Stretch is on a night out somewhere in South Wales (I think). It's late and there's a big queue at the chippie. 'Gal' walks in 'giving it large' with some bird in tow and walks straight to the front of the queue, shouting his order accompanied by some rather arrogant body language.

Unassuming but rather large rugby player-type is understandably piqued and unceremoniously 'stretches' Gary before re-taking his own rightful place in line.

Now, even if that isn't true or bits are wrong...you just want it to have happened, don't you?
