Who is the most overrated British Boxer of the last 40 years
So many to chose from, Barry McGuigan, Henry Cooper, Kirkland Laing..
I'd have to go for Nigel Benn
Fondly remembered for all those great nights he have us in the 90's, but he was waaaaaay short of top class.
Schooled by Michael Watson and Chris Eubank early on, very very fortunate to get past Iran Barkley (punching on the floor and bogus knock-downs) and well beaten by Malinga and Collins, when he was past his best.
1 amazing performance against Gerald McClellan, (although he was aided by the referee, who had a shocker) and an impressive win against Doug DeWitt and that's your lot.
If it wasn't for Chris Eubank, he would have been forgotten years ago.
Dark, unpleasant character to boot.

Got to be Naz, who did he really fight? Was all talk and hype, when push came to it.He fell short. All thou, i did enjoy watching him.
Re: Who is the most overrated British Boxer of the last 40 years
To be fair I think Hearns pretty much accounted for Barkley at the top level in those two and a half rounds before he got nailed.
It was one of the most one-sided fights I've ever seen.

That fight should have gone on and been a classic, it was a very unsatisfactory end.

If I remember rightly, wasn't it boxing news or the daily mirror who wrote that the Benn vs Barkley fight was a disgrace and that Barkley should be banned for his own good?
Overrated - Ricky Burns, Scott Harrison, Dave McAuley and it has to be said - Duke McKenzie - a good fighter and a world class flyweight - but became a '4 time world champion' on the back of some of the worst champions known to boxing.

Ricky Burns is tipped to lose every fight. Who overrates him?
Re: Who is the most overrated British Boxer of the last 40 years
Naz has got to be the most over-rated. He feasted on guys past their best. And lost the first serious test to his greatness.
David Haye is well over-rated too. His fights at heavyweight were plain terrible!!

I actualy reckon Naz is probably the best British fighter of all time, so cant go along with you there.
At his peak and in the mood he was "unplayable"
By the time he fought Barrera, he was 4 years past his best.

Couldnt agree more, if he hasnt proved by now that Martinez was no fluke then im sure he will in his next few fights. Im a massive Crolla fan but I dont see why he deserves to get in with Burns. Burns should be challenging for full world honours which completely deserves. The Dark Destroyer wrote:How is Ricky Burns overrated? Who are overrating him? Love watching back Naz but I cant help thinking that his best moments came against poor opposition.

Good calls on Herbie Hide and Howard Eastman.
Whilst, he is NOT overated in terms of overall achievement. I think some people have been quick to forget that Froch did lose to Kessler and have overated his P4P standing based on his display against Arthur Abraham. I'm a bit stunned still that people have him NOW in their top 5 P4P lists... lets wait till Saturday before we start putting him in the P4P bracket.
Naz is an awkard one, talent then no way he was overated - achievements. Whilst still undoubtedly among the finest we have had in the last 40 years - people had him way too high on the P4P lists. I had him at 9 in his pomp and got absolutely crucified by American's for having him way too low.

McKenzie would be my 3.

Audley Harrison.
Signing deals worth millions as he turned pro with his chocolate coin hanging round his neck.
For a Sprott-level fighter his bank balance is insane.
BBC blew out Haye & Froch to pay for Audley's first clutch of fights ! Now if that's not overrated I don't know what is.

Johnny Nelson. Awful fighter defending 'mickey mouse' titles. Some of the dullest performances I've seen have involved 'The entertainer'.

Re: Who is the most overrated British Boxer of the last 40 years
Surprised at Naz and Benn being involved here, while they both operated at World Level I'm not sure they were widely regarded in p-4-p lists and the thing was that they didn't get in with their major overseas rivals so we'll never really know... I can see why they were both frustrating but both great to watch and great draws.
In terms of sheerly being over-rated, Nelson great shout, Cleverly - World champ?, Harrison, Hatton to a certain extent (he was excellent but by the time included in p4p lists had neglected his boxing and was massively on the slide)... Bruno! Am I out of order for mentioning the big man?
