Does anyone else hate it when they hear this? Haye did it, Khan's done it, and so have a few others. Now I know people have to look after their health first and foremost, but when I hear this it reeks of arrogance, rather than for health reasons. Like they are 100% convinced they will have acheived all their goals by then and can therefore dip out. Disrespectful to the rest of boxing in my opinion, and to the boxers who HAVE to keep on fighting to put food on the table. Another interesting point is very few people retire, and stay retired when they say they will.

Not sure about the bits on arrogance, etc but yes, I don't like it mainly because it's an absolute crock of horseshit, Haye's load of bollocks being the most obvious and recent example.

In an ideal World it works but boxing isn't part of an ideal World. Defeats and money often prolong careers. Most fighters can't simply walk away.

Taking so long negotiating the money side of the Klitschko fight when he had already set a retirement date made it fairly clear he was more interested in the cash than the titles. Fair play to him, he is set for life and has avoided excessive wear and tear but I think his fans will be disappointed again if he fights Vitali

He's obviously not the first fighter to go into the ring solely thinking about money, but it's probably the most blatant cash grab I can think of, in terms of not really trying to win the fight.

I think if the fighter is saying it and means it then its sensible. Too many fighters end up fighting until past their prime to earn a few quid and their health suffers. If you are good enough, then get your wins, get your belts earn a load of £££ and get out while you can still enjoy the rest of your life

I think if the vast majority of people on here could do something they loved for 10 years and retire aged 28 or 29 and live a life of comfort from their earnings then they would.

I'm not sure..... you don't hear footballers saying ''I can't wait to retire'' or ''I'm gonna quit on my 30th birthday''.

To me that's just as dangerous as a fighter going on and on, because their heart isn't really in it, meaning you're just as likely to get hurt.

Obviously I don't like any fighter going on to a ridiculous age and being punchy or whatever, Haye took the piss though, took everyone for mugs and sold himself out for the greenbacks.

I often hear that statement in everyday life but lately it has been replaced by 'I was going to retire by the time I'm x years old. I've now got to keep working till I'm y years old.'

I remember Oscar De La Hoya saying the same about retiring at 30 and wanting to become an architect only to fight on till he was 36 and ended up getting his backside handed to him on a silver platter with all the trimmings by Manny Pacquiao as he absolutely killed himself to make Welterweight to fight Pacquiao. I just tend to ignore any fighter who says that he wants to retire by certain age and prefer when a fighter retires either because he is either lost the hunger for it and/or has nothing to prove anymore.

I just ignore when they say it to be honest. I remember Jermaine Taylor saying it and reading up on his history he had never really been in love with the game. Still fighting though. It is a crock of shit when all said and done

Its a bit daft, especially with Haye. I do honestly believe that he will only fight again if its a Klitschko. Thats a real shame as he is clearly in great form and has so much left to prove at heavyweight. By retiring now, he is letting his fans and the sport down.

But he is very much his own man and he'll do as he pleases, credit to him for that.

Nothing much to get upset about here is there? I imagine most of us in the same situation would like to think we would get out on top of our game, with marbles and health intact. Easier said than done though, ask Bernard Hopkins.

Ideally, I'm sure all fans want all boxers to get out with their finances and health in tact. In a perfect world. Just when you hear that people like Cleverley say 'I'm gonna retire in 4 or 5 fights', and you know they think they are that good that they can clean up and call it a day in a certain timeframe because they've won everything in sight. I just think a lot of them are delusional but I suppose that's nothing new.
