I actually completely agree with Stretch's assessment of Eubank's career. Eubank, like Calzaghe after him, did stagnate, largely content to defend a meaningless title against nondescripts and has-beens. Eubank absolutely should have used his title as a launch pad to America for real fights against Toney, Nunn etc. Eubank gets far too much reverence on here considering how much he squandered his talents and defrauded his fans with timewasting performances against pointless opponents.

The film was ranked number 180 in Empire magazine's "201 Greatest Movies Of All Time" feature in the March 2006 issue. It also made other appearances in the magazine's 2008 list of the 500 greatest movies of all time where it was ranked at number 462 [2] and in October 2011 where it came 27th in the "100 Best British Films Ever" [3]
Paddy Considine won "Best British Actor" at the 2005 Empire Awards, beating, amongst others, Simon Pegg for Shaun of the Dead and Daniel Craig for Layer Cake. Toby Kebbell was nominated for the Most Promising Newcomer at the British Independent Film Awards.

Agree with this. People look back on Eubank with rose-tinted spectacles but he fought a lot of poor opponents, won a lot of controversial decisions, and was often in boring fights. It is perhaps right that we remember him for his Benn and Watson performances, but they were definitely the exceptions in his career. More typical were snoozers against Esset or gifts against Schommer. And considering all the stick Calzaghe got for his opposition, even he never fought world title fights against the likes of Storey, Amaral, Sherry... or, indeed, Gary Stretch.

It is a commentary on small town hooligans who throw their weight around but back down when confronted by someone who is actually trained and stands their ground. It happens quite often. Check out Youtube for real life clips. Sonny etc. are all viewed as hard cases but in the film you never actually see them doing anything that could be considered tough or gritty apart from bullying a disabled kid. That's the whole point of Richard having the little speech about bullies and mentally weak cowards.

I grew up in Gorton and often saw a single individual stand his ground against a group of about 5-10 so-called 'hard men'.

Just watched DMS thought it was very good, thought the lead guy was brilliant, and the lad playing the disabled guy was great too. Its not earth shatteringly amazing but very watchable, give me something like that over some hollywood action type guff any day.

If stretch ever gets bored acting he could always stand in for one of the kemp bros in spandau ballet, looks the image of one of em!
