Super-Heavyweight

Post by clintonmcphilbin »

Should boxing start having a super heavyweight divison or take the heavyweight limit to 16stone.
Was watching ali vs frazier and in that fight ali weighed 15'4 frazier 14'9 and as we all know was a cracker but over last few years people have lost intrest as to many miss matches. current british champ tyson fury in is last fight weighed 18'5 stone so if you look at it this way if he fought cruiser champ leon williams at the heavyweight limit of 14'4 it would the same weighed difference as williams fighting ashley theopane. I love the big guys fighting but something needs to change. 16+ is more fairer then what it is at the min and would create some great fight as it would be easier for some of the smaller heavys to get under 16 and would let the big heavys fight each other more. I know boxing as it tradions but it needs to move with the times and understand people are bigger now then they was 50 years or so ago.

No not for me, we need less weight divisions.

Ten is adequate.

105
112
118
126
135
147
160
175
190 (down from 200)

But like you post shows biggest weight difference is 15lb we have some heavyweights weighing 19stone when the weight limits 14'4.

I'm starting to think this might just be a good idea. A 190 - 224 division might be just what boxing needs.

You are not serious are you?

Tyson Fury was used as an example. I am pretty sure i could find 20 fighters at less than 224 who would beat Tyson Fury without much trouble at all. 224 plus is way overweight for 90% of heavyweights. If most trained themselves down to 200-210 or even further in many cases, they would be twice the fighters they are. If it wasnt for thefact that they two hardest trainers and best fighters happen to be giants at the moment (and they wont always be) the world champion would almost certainly be below 220.

I used three current british champs as examples for the last ten years every british av been over 16 stone and also all current world champ are also over 16stone.

Good post and i think is a definate as people are naturally becoming bigger and bigger and we see too many unfair matches due to certain fghters with such height and reach advantages pummeling smaller opponents mostly blown up cruisers, something needs to change as it can put plenty of miles on a fighter some of the beatings the smaller heavies are getting

It's not size, it's quality.

A 15st Ali would beat everyone now with ease. We don't need to get rid of the big guys, we need another Ali to come along!

If you create a super heavyweight division it will be that one that assumes the flagship role. The newly created heavyweight would be similar to cruiser is now.

i see you point but now a days there more big heavys. In ali days in the 60's 70's most top heavys where between 14'4 and 16 stone so by moving the klits ,fury etc you could get the next ali like u say.

A good 14st heavyweight would drill a 19st pudding.

Haye could have beaten Valuev's, Ustinov's, Fields's for another ten years if he fancied.

How many years has David Haye been the best British fighter? And how would Jerry Quarry have gone over the last 10 years against those big guys?

wgt/hgt not issue just quality...actually too many of the big guys carry too much....but to create another wgt division will create another 3 Wba champions....but actually titles mean nowt just the quality of fight

I'd drop the heavy/super heavy limit by, say, 25lb but the idea is perfect.

Alternately, there could be some kind of BMI type rating beyond which heavies are not allowed to go, so that you don't get people bulking up on blubber!

Having a super-heavy division would attract the Butterbean-esque fattys and would make boxing a laughing stock.

Just because so many heavyweights are obese now doesn't mean we should fornicate up boxing anymore by diluting the once glamourous heavyweight division and creating even more crappy champs.

Big tall guys, huge fat guys, they've all been chopped down by technically astute, in shape heavyweights.

The problem is those great heavyweights are all around 60 or 70 or dead now.

If we could replenish Larry Holmes, at 6'3 and 215lb, he wouldn't lose a round against these guys.

George Foreman, at 215, had a greater reach than Vitali Klitschko.

Sonny Liston, at 6'1', had the same freaky long reach as Lennox Lewis! These fat fucks would not escape his sledge hammer jab, let alone the bombs that would follow off it.

Oh to see Sonny Liston in today's division. Oh God, I'm hard just thinking about it.

The guy (Andy Ruiz) actually looks pretty good, it sounds to me like his diet is poor as much as anything, probably stuffing his face with sweet carb rich food.,

He fights at a pretty good pace, and he seems very quick, so he can't be unfit.

The Mattias Vidondo fight/farce from Argentina http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EALcYERW-s0

Andy Ruiz has lost around 45lbs since his debut so should be able to trim a bit more...
