Largest Crowd?

Post by Justin »

Chavez - Haugen had 130,000 spectators
Georges Carpentier - Jack Dempsey had 80,183 spectators

I forget the Exact Schmeling - Louis II attendance, but it rivaled the above attendances...

Didn't Jess Willard - Jack Johnson have a 50 thousand + attendance too? Anyone know the Infamous Dempsey Shelby fight attendance? (I know it was a lot lower than expected by the townspeople, just wondering what it was)... I'll have to look at the old newspapers for the Louis-Schmeling II attendance.

I don't know much about the Chavez-Haugen fight. I heard he talked a lot of smack and then took a severe beat down. 130,000!!! That had to have taken place in Mexico City. And they had to have loved seeing Haugen go down.

The two Dempsey v Tunney matches were seen by more than 100.000 people too I believe, and the Demsey v Firpo fight also had a very large number of spectators.....
By the way, I read a few years back in KO magazine that a Luisito Espinosa title defence in the Philipines drew more than 400.000 people!!!
May have been a typo, may be my lack of memory, 'cause I can't imagine a stadium big enough to hold that many spectators.

Thanks for those records Steve O, appreciate it...

Ali,Foreman, Frazier and the welters of the 80's attacted a lot of fans though, but since there hasn't been any huge gates.

I think the reason we don't see huge attendances like that since the '50's is because back in the day you could only see the fight by actually being there, or listening to it on the radio... Plus we have the introduction of several other sports since the '20's, when Boxing was THE sport.

How about August 16, 1941 - Tony Zale vs Billy Prior at Juneau Park, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Attendance 135,132. Would that qualify?

That's THE record as far as I know.
However, it should be noted that admission was free that day.
