Figured, I was hoping otherwise, I have a standout 9 yr old at about 55lbs who I would have loved to bring, but he will miss the cut off by 3 months.boxmel wrote:Silver Gloves is always January 1st of the following year. 8)Does anyone know the cut off date for ages this year? Re: 2012 National Silver Gloves Dates,Sites & Results
Just some random thoughts about today finals (I am not there but just following the brackets):
10/11 70lbs. Cruz Solano vs. Elmer Monarrez - I love to watch little Elmer box. This kid is nothing but energy and skills. I'm picking him to get his first (I believe) Natl. Silver Gloves belt.
12/13 80lbs. Keyshawn Davis vs. David Navarro - Don't know Navarro but I see he's from LA and I'm pretty sure he's one of the many in the boxing fam. Davis and his brother are very good boxers so this should be a good bout.
12/13 119lbs. Joe Veazey vs. Oscar Chavez - Veazey was injured last year and couldn't defend his title but he's back and I think this will be his 2nd title. I have him winning today.
12/13 106lbs. Danardo Johnson vs. Aaron Morales - Morales will be a tough path to go through for Johnson, looking for his 1st national silver gloves title. Again, I would be watching this one if I was there. Morales has the edge in experience as he has put in a lot of work in tourneys and even traveling around the country for sparring. If anyone can record this, please do.
14/15 90lbs. Andrew Strode vs. Jordan White - two defending silver gloves champions will face off in what should be the first in many meetings between the two who have been around for years. Strode is a year older but this is one that you won't want to miss. This will be nothing but action.
14/15 95lbs. Nico Hernandez vs. Keyshawn Williams - Ok, so Nico is going FOR HIS 6TH SILVER GLOVES CHAMPIONSHIP IN A ROW, so does Williams have a shot??? I've seen his kid in they gym a lot and he can box. Period. The only thing that he is lacking is experience which may be the difference. But, this will be a very skilled matchup between two good boxers. Definitely one to watch.
14/15 125lbs. Neslan Machado vs. Alec Zavala - Ok, so Neslan is from my region and I've seen him for the past few years and the best way to describe him is "full speed ahead". Every punch is thrown with bad intentions and he won't back down from anyone (not always a good thing in this sport). Saw him battle with Gary Salazar last year and had the crowd in a frenzy after leaving it all in the ring. Experience will only fine tune his blitzkreig style. I have Neslan winning over Zavala with constant pressure and power. Let me know if I was right for anyone who will be watching this.
14/15 112lbs. Antonio Vargas vs. Ruben Villa - Fight of the night right here. Vargas in the 2010 NSG Most Outstanding Boxer who punched his ticket last year to defend his title at the regionals but was unable to attend the rescheduled tournament last year. I expect this to be one of, if not THE fight of the night. Villa has more experience on the national level, but Vargas has the skills to pull what some may call an upset. I think these two are closer in skill than many may believe. Again, let's see if I'm right.

David is cousin to Carlos and Jose and is following in their footsteps. I had Keyshawn on my ring last night and agree that it should be a VERY good bout.12/13 80lbs. Yeah, that's like being named "Russell" and being from DC/MD. lol. I saw an older Navarro at JO Nationals last year. Can't wait to see some video of these bouts.boxmel wrote:David is cousin to Carlos and Jose and is following in their footsteps. What ring are you working today, Mel?
Re: 2012 National Silver Gloves Dates,Sites & Results
If they are keepoing the three rings, I'll most likely stay on Ring 3. Off to the venue now - bouts start in 45 minutes. What ring are you working today, Mel?
Re: 2012 National Silver Gloves Dates,Sites & Results
My first time at the NSG,I had a great time, level of competition is at a high level, makes you realize that in your own area your guys aren't as good as you may think sometimes and that as a coach you have to pick up training to a higher level
