Jack Sharkey...how he compared Dempsey and Louis

Post by bennie »

Does anyone know how Jack Sharkey - the only man to fight Dempsey and Louis - compared the two?

small correction......there's another fighter to face both, Dempsey AND Louis

....Sharkeys big rival Max Schmeling fought Dempsey in an exibition in Germany back in 1925 and his two great fights with Louis are well known.

It was hard to get a straight answer out of Sharkey on this one. On a radio interview when I asked him who hit hardest , I don't remember the actual dollar figures, but he said "Dempsey... he knocked me out of a million dollars and Louis only a hundred thousand." I remember reading a quote after his kayo by Louis and he said ..(paraphrasing from memory) "He's young and fast now, but someday he'll be old lilke me and a young and fast guy will get him. It happens to all of us."

Interesting comment about Schmelling and Dempsey. Never heard of that before. Remember when Schmelling came over there was so much talk about how much he looked liked Dempsey? I may be mistaken, but for some reason I think King Levinsky might have been in an exhibition with Dempsey. Anybody got info on this? Trolling further into the recesses of my brain, I even think Levinsky did so well it was one reason why Dempsey dispelled anyh thoughts of a come back.

You can count Max Baer as well, if counting exhibitions.

I read an article in Ring over ten years ago about Sharkey. He said that Dempsey would have Knocked Out Louis easily.

However, I always thought he said that to pad his own ego. Because we was winning many rounds versus Dempsey and just got caught looking away from a punch (to complain to the ref about a low blow) when he was knocked out. Sharkey was winning the fight. His fight with Louis was all Joe. Joe simply beat up the old vet.

Sharkey could/should have beaten Dempsey, so it makes him look better if he said Dempsey beats Louis.

As for Dempsey and Schmelling: They sparred together all the time when Schmelling was champ and when he was training for Louis.

Anyway....I don't know who would have won between Joe and Jack. Great puncher vs. Great puncher. However, I don't think Jack at 190 lbs would have been physically strong enough to beat Joe.

hmmm....i think Jack and Max had nearly the same weight...and cause Max was able to knock out Louis in '36, Jack would have had his chances too.
so if we think of two fights here (like with Joe and Max) i predict both would have won one contest.....
