Looks a decent opponent for Khan - seems durable enough.

Actual win loss records dont bother me at this point, he's a novice after all. But I'm pleased he's fighting a guy his own size (weight, not height!), thats definitely the way forward.

The 'way forward' is fighting guys with these records, but ones who have actually extended good fighters rather than 15-39 guys. Khan will bomb out this guy in 1 round. Once more, frankie proves he has no knowledge of how to bring along an olympic superstar.

Can you imagine how khan would have been matched in america? :o

ok, i'm probably being impatient, but warren HAS to show confidence in his fighter this time above all.

I don't think Khan will be fed another 10 or 15 of these personally. He could nearly beat this guy with his eyes shut.

If he's good enough he'll be stepped up accordingly.

can't agree with you on that one, i think Carey is an acceptable opponent, changing from the amatuers to the pros is a big step even for an olympic silver medal winner, even down to the ring walks and introductions, Khan needs a few fights to get used to all this. He's not knocking on like Audley Harrison was , Khan is 18/19yo so no need to rush him up a level.

I knew everyone would respond with the old 'WHo do you want him to fight, Castillo? hysterionics.

All I'm saying is that compared to other olympics champs and hotshots stateside, this matchmaking is pedestrian.

We all want to see Khan get to the top, and he is totally capable without wasting time fighting scrub after scrub, 18 years old or not.

Who can tell me they wouldn't like to see khan as British champ this time next year. If he gets a move on he'll have more time at the end of his career to do the business at world level rather than bumbling around now fighting 'tough' but overmatched guys as a novice.

to reiterate- no, I don't expect him to fight castillo in his next fight. Give me some credit for knowing how boxing works.

I know everyone gives Warren stick but i read an article the other week by Warren about Amirs first fight and it was a good read, basically comparing Amirs first opponent to the likes of Lennox Lewis first opponent, Sugar Ray Leonards first opponent & Oscar De La Hoya's first opponent and that no one had ever heard of them (the opponents) and these guys still went a long way (Lewis etc). Anyway i think we should still compare now, i mean people are expecting to much of Amir in only his 2nd fight, just look at the poeple legends like Tyson, Hagler, Duran, Hearns, De la Hoya fought in their 2nd fight and i'm sure they will somewhat compare to the level that Amir will face in his 2nd pro fight. Lets just lay off the guy for a while, if he gets to 15-0 and still fighting bums then i could understand the frustration but come on its his 2nd fight for christ sake. :TU:

Fair enough mate :P

But Khan as british champ in a year- sounds good doesn't it? And everyone knows its attainable without a diet of patsies in between.

Edit: Kevin, I didn't know about that rule, but what about 12 rounders?

I am sure the rules is that you are not allowed to box anything over 30 minutes until you are twenty years old and one day

I think it is a good matchup, Carey is not the worst fighter in the world i mean didn't he beat Peter Buckley in Buckley's 200th fight? Buckley must surely be considered as a future opponent although he is now listed as Welterweight.

As for British champion in a year well i heard something similar to what Kev mentioned, i don't think you can contest 12 rounds until your over 20 can you? Sure i read it somewhere ages ago.

From now until he's around 21 there's a good chance it will be all about putting money in the bank. Hopefully Frank uses a 'trust fund' type clause in their contract, so a healthy portion of money only becomes available after their career is over. Frank would never live it down if Khan turned out shot in his early/mid twenties. Remember it was 38 fights before Ricky Hatton first contested for a 'world' title, though I think Khan will get one sooner than that (around fight 25).

Utter rubbish I am afraid, Lennox Lewis fought a guy who was 5-10-1 in his second fight.

i'm talking about how warren's matchmaking is likely to go, not comparing fighters contest by contest.

Anyway, look at de la hoya's early record if you want to know what my point is. Took him just over a year to fight bredahl for a title, and Khan arguably has even more raw talent than DLH.

If you look at allegedly closely before khan's fight. He always seemed to have no confidence in khan being a great fighter and always said he wanted to take it slow.

To slow for my liking, khan can go to the top 10 alot quicker with better promotion. At least this fight will be better than the bailey one, it'll probably go on for a good 20 seconds more. :D

a quick comparison with the way the americans bring along their olympians:

Andre Ward
1st Fight: 2-0-0
2nd Fight: 8-0-0

Jeff Lacy
1st Fight: 2-2-0
2nd Fight: 8-5-1

Jermain Taylor
1st Fight: 17-4-1
2nd Fight: 9-4-0

I think those 3 might have had alot more amateur experince though. Doesn't really bother me Khan taking it slow, it's when they say they are that good and can do something then why not prove it?

De La Hoya was not the norm though. The guy was supremely talented and had a decent amateur career behind him.

There's no way Khan had more raw talent than DLH had, I dont agree with that.

Khan will probably get half a dozen easy fights then step it up. Considering his age and how short his senior amateur career was thats probably not a bad idea.
