Did anyone here ever meet Patterson? He always came across as a real class act and gentleman.

Never met him, but certainly agree with the perception you had of him.

In a way, he was too gentlemanly. I think he got jobbed against Ellis in '68 and the decision in the WBA tournament fight with Quarry in '67 was very debatable. Floyd seemed to shrug his shoulders and accept the decisions, but I wish he would have spoken up for himself more.

Take a look at the genuine concern that Floyd had for his knockout victims. Study the film when Patterson knocked out Ingo to reclaim the title. After going to the neutral corner and waiting for the count to finish, Floyd gave himself a moment of congratulation, but then promptly went over to check on Ingo's condition. If that had been Ali in that situation, he would have been running all over the ring making an ass of himself, condition of opponent be damned.

Patterson is my second favorite fighter of all time. A very sympathetic character, imo.

I loved his on the toes, probing, peek-a-boo style, followed by that leaping left hook or super fast combinations when he found an opening.

The Cooper fight in '66 is my favorite Patterson fight. He finished his man very well and cleanly that night, something Ali couldn't do in two tries.

I knew someone who knew him. He said Floyd Patterson's private persona was the same as his public persona.

Ray, aren't you a West Coast guy and go back to the 60's?

Do you remember those two Quarry-Patterson fights in '67 well?

Both very, very close decisions. Didn't see the first fight, to my knowledge it wasn't televised.

I watched the second fight on ABC's WWOS as a kid in Louisiana and remember Quarry starting well, knocking down Floyd and building up a lead, but Patterson finishing very strongly. I was very disappointed that Patterson didn't win that one.

Never could understand that California point type scoring system. I always thought the NY State round scoring system was more understandable.

That was before I found out about the bizarre gardening accident that left you in a wheelchair, Irene.

Still, even shut-in cripples like you and Nancy can talk tough on the internet.

Good idea Tom.

Back away from him and try not to make eye contact.

He's not hauling a full load.

I've often wondered if Patterson ever sparred with an amateur Mike Tyson in the early 80's because I know that Floyd sparred up until 1994 with amateurs.

A typical Irene moment.

I wonder, does she realise she has essentially become a Decagon knock-off.

Apart from her being in a wheelchair, of course.

It doesnt. Unless you wear a huge, smart ass grin when you're green with envy, or you have Pseudo Bulba Affect, the emoticon is cheeky, not envious.

A mighty cheap knock-off, one might add.

He doesn't belong in the same time zone with Granberry.
