He was a solid boxer, a skilled counter-puncher with a fighting heart but no physical attributes. He was no elite level fighter, but a very solid B level guy.

Depends on your definition of elite, he was a top 5 guy for a lengthy period. But he could never compete with a Whitaker and he was soundly out-boxed by Pazienza in their third fight. He was incredibly tough and had tremendous stamina. Beating Camacho was probably his greatest achievement, weed or whatever it was notwithstanding.

He had 300 amateur fights and was at one time the winner of "the World's Toughest Man" competition. Surprisingly good counterpuncher. His style was really geared towards guys who chased him. He would counter them silly. He dominated in my book Pazienza twice, then when Paz ran the last fight he won clearly. He also beat a very very tough Jimmy Paul to win his first title. First guy to beat Camacho and both fights were razor close. From what I understand he had a hugely crazy marriage with a wife with drug problems causing a lot of strife during his career. He beat a lot of good fighters and lost to some great ones Whitaker and Chavez. Nothing about losing to those two. Whitaker was unbeatable during that time. Hell, he outboxed Chavez easy too. In the Chavez fight in Mexico - they waved the fight off with Haugen not even hurt (although I don't think he by any means was going to win and this was hugely a period in his life when things were out of control).

Very solid good trainer now. Oh, and knocked out Freddie Roach on ESPN!

I was also a Chris Calvin fan, from ESPN, a fighter died from Calvin's blows in a previous fight and Calvin was ruined as a boxer from that point, which I saw similar thing happen to Ray Mancini, and heard it changed Emile Griffiths style .
