Mitch Blood Green

Post by Cutman Scabbers »

Just watched Blood's fight with Mike Tyson again -- there's the full HBO broadcast on Youtube.

Anyone know where one can see his bout with Trevor Berbick, or some of his other fights?

What I wanna know is does Mitch Green still have that indentation
between his eyes from Mike Tyson's ring?
Also what is the current tally in 2011 of his moving traffic violations?

I think that was a preliminary to the Hector Comacho -Luis Ramirez
fight that aired in 1985 on HBO.
they should have a copy of it.

Really talented guy but had his career ruined by Don King and also his own attitude. The commentary on the green-tyson fight, with tompkins,Merchant and SRL is the most shameless, disgusting display of biased and insulting commentary I have heard. Merchant spends all his time moaning "one guy wants to fight the other doesnt"...and "Tyson is in with a guy who wont cooperate".....they spend all their time lambasting Green for the shots he is taking, almost as if they wish Green would just hand the spectacular kayo to their poster child Tyson....no where do they mention, Jose Torres the glorified Tyson cheerleader, and also NY Athletic Commission top dog has forced Green before the fight to fight Tyson despite King reducing his promised pay drastically otherwise Green will have his licence revocked...Boxing was a very dirty business in 1986....and Green was royally screwed by everyone, not least the HBO commentators who gave Green no credit whatsoever for his chin, toughness, occasional speedy flurries, or his defiance for ten brutal rounds. Ray Leonard in particular being a boxer should have shown some respect for Green and what he was going through in the ring.......I think the whole experience broke Green he fought very sparingly for the rest of his career and never reached anywhere near the same level.

I just remember seeing more stories about Mitch Green on the 11 'clock
news sports cast more then any of his actual fights on TV..
Like when he showed up at the Tim Witherspoon-Bonecrusher Smith
press conferance in December 1986.
yelling at Don King and and then chasing Don King out a door.
Mitch Green was scheduled to fight Bonecrusher Smith
on the preliminary of what was suppose to be Witherspoon vs Tubbs II for the WBA belt,
but Tubbs pulled out a week earlier due to a shoulder injury in training.
So they substituted Smith to take the place for a title shot.
I do not know if King bothered to compensate Mitch Green for his cancelled
payday against Bonecrusher Smith either,he was still mad about bein short changed
by Don King for his purse money from the Tyson fight earlier.

Mitch Green was scheduled to fight James Broad for a 12 round bout
for the North American Boxing Federation title as a the preliminary on the
Holmes-Bey fight March 1985.
I dont know why it was cancelled, but by the time he fought
Trevor Berbick,he had not been the in ring for an entire year.
He would also claim he only trained 7 days for the Berbick fight,
so maybe he got it on short notice.
Green had earlier accosted Trevor Berbick
shortly after Berbick won the USBA title against David Bey
in June 1985).I dont know if that was in the ring, during an interview or what
Maybe at the post fight conference?
The Berbick-Bey fight was on the undercard of the Pinklon Thomas-Mike Weaver fight. That one was aired on HBO.

Mitch Green was a sparring partner for Larry Holmes back in 1981-1982
when he was preparing to fight Renaldo Snipes and Gerry Cooney.
Holmes did a public exhibition in March 1982 in Atlantic City NJ with Mitch Green and Jumbo Cummings
Green vs Walter Santemore was an undercard of Holmes vs Cooney.
but I dont know if it was taped.

He should've taken the Broad fight, and it would've put him in the stratosphere, it was a fight he could've won.In the right scenario, if he had made the most of his Tomorrow's Champions appearances, he'd be talked about now.Definitely one of the fastest heavies of that time frame.

I really enjoyed them too, Brutu.

Let us know more if you have more stories/information!

Do you know the stories about the last several fights of Green's career?

How about the bouts with Foster, Dixon, Otero, and Nix?

Was Green training at all during the 6+ years he didn't fight following the Tyson bout?

Yes during one of Green's fights on Youtube, Larry Holmes is a commentator, and he praises Green.

I seem to remember that a year or two ago, Mitch "Blood" Green also had
a facebook page(it looked like an actual one of him, with many personel photos)
but it looks like it was removed,I havent seen it in a while.
Perhaps his lawyer advised him to take it down,
as a number of his"friends"on it may have looked a little shady.

The only thing I remember about Green in recent times is in relation to a guy who wrote a book along the lines of " Facing Tyson ", and obviously Mitch Green was one of the guys he wanted to interview.

It was hilarious, cloak and dagger stuff, upshot is the guy never did get the interview, Green wanted fortunes of money, and if that saga was anything to go by, its little wonder his Facebook page was removed because of his associates.

According to boxrec,Mitch Green just stopped and refused to throw punches
at Bruce Johnson in their 1993 bout.
its recorded recorded as TKO 3
I never could find out why Green just stopped punching.

In early 1998,almost 10 years after the incident outside Dapper Dan's in Harlem.
A jury awarded Mitch Green $450,000 dollars in damages.

also in 2003 ,Mitch Green was considered as a possible opponent for Kevin McBride
on the Roy Jones Jr-John Ruiz title fight.

I also would like to know. It sounds like a possible Oliver McCall moment...

I saw him spar a few times at Gleasons' around 1995-6. In these sparring sessions, he didn't throw many punches. I asked him about it, and he said "I condition my body for punishment."

Did he really get almost half a million in damages?

another cancelled fight of Mitch Green's was supposed to be against Shannon Briggs
December.15.1995 at MSG on the undercard of Oscar De La Hoya vs Jesse James Leijas. But a week before it,Mitch Green went berserk over something at his managers office and wrecked the place(It does not say in this article, but I think his manager at the time was Rock Newman?)
