Re: Ray Mercer vs Joe Frazier, primes
Frazier wins a close & hard fought decision in an action packed fight.
I could even seen Joe taking a count, but ultimately, he'd be too busy for Mercer, who admittedly was all action himself.

Frazier by wide decision, Mercer wasn't much of an in-fighter and Joe would laugh at his jab. Much like Marciano, Ray takes an elongated ass whipping.

I'd love to put some money down on this fight with you. Or your houseSyntax Error wrote:Frazier wins a close & hard fought decision in an action packed fight.

Frazier brutally &, as Saad says, over a protracted period. Mercer would quit on his stool at some point. It would resemble what Frazier would've done to Tua.

I don't see Mercer winning a round. Like I said, he is everyone's favorite mythical Heavyweight. Perhaps I just can't get over watching him suck wind while Jesse Ferguson boxed his ears off.

Re: Ray Mercer vs Joe Frazier, primes
To say you could see Frazier taking a count is sheer lunacy.
Is Mercer entering with a handgun in his trunks!?

Re: Ray Mercer vs Joe Frazier, primes
I doubt Mercer could fight 3 rounds at the pace Frazier could keep up for 15 rounds. Is Mercer becoming the most overrated heavyweight in here? I mean this is the guy who drew with Marion Wilson and now he´s giving Frazier a hard fight? Imagine Frazier fighting Marion Wilson to a draw, he´ll the Frazier who drew with Cummings would sweep Wilson.

This would be a Ron Stander redux (and yes, Mercer was better than Stander but I don't see him being much more competitive). Mercer doesn't see the final bell.
Re: Ray Mercer vs Joe Frazier, primes
I agree with Yancey and Dempsey - it doesn't seem likely that Mercer will see the final bell.

Re: Ray Mercer vs Joe Frazier, primes
I think some of you guys are underestimating Mercer.
I'm not saying Mercer is an ATG or anything remotely close, but Mercer was a tough SOB (as they say in the USA) & his style, coupled with the fact that Frazier was often a slow starter might have meant he could have put up a good showing against the great Smokin' Joe.
I see some are mentioning other fighters etc, so in that case, how would Mercer have fared against Oscar Bonavena then?
Besides, why post a hypothetical match-up if there is a supposed massive perceived gap in ability between the 2 opponents?
In that case, you might as well put up a Muhammad Ali -v- Julius Francis or Sugar Ray Robinson -v- 'Slick' Willie Wise thread.

Re: Ray Mercer vs Joe Frazier, primes
This is the most accurate assesment imo of how this fight pans out. Joe would slip rays jab all night long, and hammer an easy win....I would wager Joe stops him too for all of Rays toughness, durability and chin in his prime. Mercer overcame adversity with damiani and morrison, but those guys are nowhere near joes level.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:Frazier by wide decision, Mercer wasn't much of an in-fighter and Joe would laugh at his jab. Joe Frazier by wide decision , 2 different levels of fighter. There is no doubt that Mercer is very durable in his prime but Frazier works him like never before en-route to a 11-4 in rounds win.

Re: Ray Mercer vs Joe Frazier, primes
Another mismatch. Smokin' Joe stops him late in round 12. Mercer had a great chin, but the accumulation of punches that he will get in this fight and the constant left hook in his chin, would be too much for Ray. If the fight goes for UD, Frazier wins by a very large wiiiiiddddeeee margin.
Re: Ray Mercer vs Joe Frazier, primes
Mercer would not be able to keep Frazier away from him... Frazier wins in Round 8 or Round 9.
(And I am being kind to Ray here)

Frazier by lopsided decision

I think 8 or 9 is about right.Crease wrote:Mercer would not be able to keep Frazier away from him... Frazier wins in Round 8 or Round 9.

Surprising to me that quite a few here seeing Mercer going the distance.

'Is Mercer entering with a handgun in his trunks!?" GI
Well, that would be one way to get 'er done.![[icon_e_biggrin.gif] :D](./images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif)
Might be a bit hard to pull the trigger with eight ounce gloves on.![[icon_e_biggrin.gif] :D](./images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif)

Re: Ray Mercer vs Joe Frazier, primes
I go with the majority here.
I really dont see which fighter that was able to take Joe Frazier the distance gives Mercer any type of hope whatsoever of Lasting. I suppose Bonavena maybe, but Bonavena had a better chin, and was far more proven than Mercer at reacting when under siege. Bugner i guess as well, but he was a spoiler and survivor. Mercer had good size and a pretty good chin, but wasnt in the same class as Frazier. You needed more than a good chin and size to survive with Joe Frazier. I doubt Mercer could hurt him or even discourage him from coming in, even if he was able to land clean enough.
Frazier wins a mismatch by KO, TKO, or retirement on stool around the 7th or 8th round.

Mercer had a prime?
Smokin Joe, all day long.
