Jerry Quarry vs...

Post by Goodnight, Irene »

The Foreman and Holmes at the peak of their comeback periods, so we're looking at the prime Quarry (circa-1969) against the big boys around 1991 or 92.

What happens?

I'd give him a shot against george with his combination punching, I think Holmes was just too slick for him. Ultimately I think he would lose both.

I would favor a prime Quarry against either a Holmes or Foreman circa 1990-1991. (I accidentally hit the wrong button above.)

And I think he would do it rather easily.

I'm so happy to see the recognition of a fighter that certainly qualifies as a leading contender for "best HW fighter who never attained championship status".

I think he COULD beat either guy, however it's no sure bet.

And since he could not beat Frazier or Ali, some will find my position hard to support. But Foreman gave him a wide berth. I don't think Holmes really was faced with the option until Quarry was no real threat. But in prime time, that could have gone either way as well.

There's quite a list of champions that I believe Quarry would have trounced.

I agree John. At those times in their respective careers, it's a no brainer.

But that's not the comparison we are asked to make. It's prime Quarry v. Holmes and Foreman circa 1990-1991. I can't imagine a prime Quarry losing to either of those late model editions of Holmes or Foreman.

Agree with the majority opinion that prime Jerry handily takes the later versions of Holmes and Foreman.

Also agree with BoxBuzz opining that there was some champs that Quarry would have beaten.

Indeed, there is a certain heavyweight champion that I would have loved to have seen Quarry try his luck against, but I won't propose the match-up as I will undoubtedly be accused of having another motive. :witzend:

No, Marciano.

(damn near everytime I post something the least doubtful about Marciano, rawlawpc follows with a smart aleck remark suggesting I have an agenda  to boost Frazier by belittling Rocky)

I happen to think Quarry-Marciano would have been an interesting fight. I am NOT saying Quarry wins, but I think he has a viable chance, maybe 4 in 10.

btw, Marciano was the one champ that Jerry Quarry stated publicly that he (Quarry) was absolutely sure he would have beaten. Just repeating what Jerry said, no one get their panties in a bunch, please.

I think Jerry thought he was clearly the better technical fighter and would have countered Rocky well.

It would have been an interesting fight for sure. Quarry's tendency to cut might lead to his end in this one, but I wouldn't bet much either way.

I can re-edit it back to "smart ass", if you wish.

That would be more fitting anyway.

Actually, if you hadn't challenged me by your comment in the parenthesis, I wouldn't have posted anything. :TU: I, too, think Quarry v. Marciano would have been a fascinating fight! :OhYes:

I, however, would have responded to Irene and wondered about the context of Quarry's remarks. Early in Jerry's career, Marciano was approached to join Quarry's management team. He almost made the necessary investment, but became disillusioned when Quarry drew with Alongi and then lost to Machen. He called Quarry lazy. One wonders if Quarry made those remarks with Marciano's derogatory comments in mind.

Marciano is an awful style matchup for Quarry as Frazier was. Gets stopped every time.

As for early 90s Foreman and Holmes . . puhleeeze . . if Tommy the Duke and Schultz can outpoint George, Quarry can easily. And Holmes would simply get outworked and beaten at his own cat and mongoose game.

Agreed. I think he stands a good chance against them at their best as well. But this hypothetical seems nearly a slam dunk. I wasn't paying close attention, I'm going out now to pick up a thicker pair of glasses.

No way, Foreman and Holmes would still beat him at that stages of their careers.
