Might have been able to find out for you today, if the damn library wasn't 90% shut up for refurbs.

I went along to find the building had mutated into a giant blue block.

It re-opens the week beginning the 5th September. Hopefully I will get along at some point during that week. I'll make a note of these two contests(?), and hopefully will be able to find out something providing no one else can shed any light.

Just noticed this thread is actually ABOUT Tom Crome/Tony Olson(?)

It was Jock Porter's name that caught my interest - his name seems to appear very frequently in the boxing sections...

Needless to say - I record virtually EVERY name I come across in these reports and I'll bump this thread with any info on Tom/Tony the day I happen upon it. :TU:

Would love to see what a Canadian editor could come up with...

For what it's worth, my impression of Porter is that he was an army man who fought many times in exhibition/service contests overseas quite a bit. Can't verify that, haven't learned enough yet.

Got to feel sorry for him on his big night against Ken Shaw, though. From a reporter who visited him in training:

"For the first time in his life he is having a full-scale preparation, and has been given leave of absence from his job as a draughtsman in order to attain perfection of condition".

In the actual fight (for the Scottish heavyweight title) he did well on workrate but was picked off with the quality shots, which told by the mid rounds. I get the impression from this that Porter's skill level was below that of Ken Shaw - who could hang with the likes of Bert Gilroy and Freddie Mills.
