Nathan Cleverly opponent annouced
Re: Nathan Cleverly opponent annouced
Feels like we have gone back 10 years to when Calzaghe was fighting the likes of Miguel Jimenez at Cardiff Castle, when we were told it would be Hopkins.
Bomber, why could a rematch have been made? Did Nathan not want it? Frank not keen?

Just read that, having a go about Froch facing Bute...seriously the guy has completely lost it...
Re: Nathan Cleverly opponent annouced
Sorry, but I don't buy this - Cleverly is an adult and as such is responsible for his own decisions. He chose to sign with Fwank, knowing his 'track record', so saying he is tied into the deal is no defence IMO.Cardiff-Lad1 wrote:As i'm sure most people on here know, Cleverly is tied into a deal with FW so i guess you either fight who he puts in front of you, or the alternative is?!?!?!?!
Personally, i KNOW Cleverly wants the best.

I'd sooner see you get a rematch.Bomber 1 wrote:So much for moving onwards and upwards?? So this guy is better than me? I'll say it again, I'll happily go to Cardiff! I believe it's what the fans wanna see?? You tell me?
Maybe you should head up a campaign to shame him. Turn up on the night in a tank like the WWF's D-Generation X did at a WCW show.

Big fight in the summer Enzo Macc more like!Cardiff-Lad1 wrote:His first fight of the deal was Murat (i believe) and then the plan was to fight for the Intrim and then full WBO which happened, albeit against lesser opposition due to pull outs. He then fought Bellew because it was an easy fight to make which brings us to now. You can't say that FW didn't deliver to start but ultimately this has now declined but hopefully he'll deliver a big fight in the summer.Deserter wrote:Sorry, but I don't buy this - Cleverly is an adult and as such is responsible for his own decisions. I guess you only have to look at Kell Brook to see how someones career can exel with the right promotor, he's being brought along nicely and has had more exposure/promotion in the time he has had with Matchroom compared to his whole career with FW.

But will Enzo fight anyone with pulse before hand! Should do well in Wales thats why it get made.Cardiff-Lad1 wrote:Boxing is a business after all and that'll make alot of money for all concerned if its inevitably held in Wales in the Summer. That wont happen him having a test the all Welsh clash will be blown if Enzo loses.Cardiff-Lad1 wrote:Enzo should at least be looking to fight the winner of Dodson vs McKenzie for the commonwealth strap or even Bellew for his British title.leforge wrote:But will Enzo fight anyone with pulse before hand! Re: Nathan Cleverly opponent annouced
Whichever way we cut it this fight is a joke.....he's 83rd in the world FFS.
Many boxers don't get a world title opportunity. This guy has fought literally nobody bar Murat, and he lost that. I'm stumped.
And Enzo isn't deserving of a shot either. Welsh or not, money-maker or not....

Re: Nathan Cleverly opponent annouced
Just read it as well. His bias is embarrassing. Talks about the business aspect of boxing while completely ignoring the fact that fans who shelled out for BN are being shafted... oh the irony.iamasadlittleboy wrote:Just read that, having a go about Froch facing Bute...seriously the guy has completely lost it...
Anyway, I wouldn't worry about him too much as BN is clearly not going to be a viable business going forwards and with the Independent under new editorship he may be better off saving his energy for working out how he's going to get a decent income....
Re: Nathan Cleverly opponent annouced
No thank you, like you said it should be onward and upward not backwards, this fight with Tommy Karpency is not a fight fans want to see and maybe ticket/subscriptions sales will show that, that said as YOU have always said "Boxing is a business" this is a voluntary defence not a mandatory, a chance to get his name known to more Welsh people who hopefully become fans, the bigger the following the more money a fighter generates, more money hopefully equals better opponents going forward. I would LOVE to see Bellew V Cleverly rematch, you did an amazing job in the first fight and who know 2 fights down the line (if you both win) then a mega rematch could be made?Bomber 1 wrote:So much for moving onwards and upwards?? Happy and hopefully prosperous New Year to you and your family Tony.

But if Cleverly stops this guy in few one sided rounds is it going to win him many new fans?taffytoon wrote:No thank you, like you said it should be onward and upward not backwards, this fight with Tommy Karpency is not a fight fans want to see and maybe ticket/subscriptions sales will show that, that said as YOU have always said "Boxing is a business" this is a voluntary defence not a mandatory, a chance to get his name known to more Welsh people who hopefully become fans, the bigger the following the more money a fighter generates, more money hopefully equals better opponents going forward. Re: Nathan Cleverly opponent annouced
The answer is a huge YES, you know that Joe Bloggs and Mr Fickle will follow winners regardless of who they win against, it is a fact (I have seen it many many times over the years, it is sad to watch) It is when boxers lose you see the true fans leforge.leforge wrote:But if Cleverly stops this guy in few one sided rounds is it going to win him many new fans?taffytoon wrote:No thank you, like you said it should be onward and upward not backwards, this fight with Tommy Karpency is not a fight fans want to see and maybe ticket/subscriptions sales will show that, that said as YOU have always said "Boxing is a business" this is a voluntary defence not a mandatory, a chance to get his name known to more Welsh people who hopefully become fans, the bigger the following the more money a fighter generates, more money hopefully equals better opponents going forward. Re: Nathan Cleverly opponent annouced
Taffy, by any criteria how could a rematch with Tony be regarded as a backward step when compared to the farce of the fight that's lined up? If Nathan and his team are confident of him beating Tony again, then even when judged purely in business terms Tony's the better fight to take - better publicity, bigger turn-out = more potential fans.taffytoon wrote:No thank you, like you said it should be onward and upward not backwards, this fight with Tommy Karpency is not a fight fans want to see and maybe ticket/subscriptions sales will show that, that said as YOU have always said "Boxing is a business" this is a voluntary defence not a mandatory, a chance to get his name known to more Welsh people who hopefully become fans, the bigger the following the more money a fighter generates, more money hopefully equals better opponents going forward. I will agree that I would have prefered a rematch buddy.Deserter wrote:Taffy, by any criteria how could a rematch with Tony be regarded as a backward step when compared to the farce of the fight that's lined up? Dont think Cleverly anywhere near Joe level. Think he be wrapped in cotton wool this year.King Geedorah wrote:It certainly looks like Nathan is being given the Calzaghe build up. I can’t see him catching on. Then again, I couldn’t see Joe catching on so have been wrong before.
Forget the main course. Are we getting Steve ‘Bouncebackability’ Bunce Vs Ian ‘Big Daddy Caned’ McNeilly on the undercard over 6x1?
Re: Nathan Cleverly opponent annouced
And I can't see how Frank can lose out by this rematch. No matter what the result is he would leave with a World Champion and both you and Nathan increasing your notoriety. Fighting bums does nothing for ANY stakeholderBomber 1 wrote:So much for moving onwards and upwards?? So this guy is better than me? I'll say it again, I'll happily go to Cardiff! Re: Nathan Cleverly opponent annouced
He certainly going down the Calzaghe route for sure. Think Joe had more talent even at the start of his WBO reign think he had better defences skills than Nathan.King Geedorah wrote:Of course not as things stand as Joe retired with two divisions under his belt and undefeated. But both came through by winning vacant domestic and world belts and both took on domestic guys mixed with the odd import during the early years. It took Joe 3-4 years to really get motoring, Eubank was badly faded when they fought and Reid had seen his best come and go. The two are comparable if you think on and look at where Joe was at by this point. As I said, neither man has the X factor but they made a silk purse out of Joe’s personality.leforge wrote:Dont think Cleverly anywhere near Joe level. Re: Nathan Cleverly opponent annouced
Agree 100% (although I think your being slightly harsh). Cleverly vs Karpency is not a good fight, but it's not a shocker either. It is however in no way a 'proper' world title fight but how many really are anyway?MachoMan09 wrote:Cleverly's most recent outing highlighted his glaring limitations. That he had a tough night's work against Bellew confirmed to me that he would get absolutely rinsed at anything even remotely close to the topflight. Careful matchmaking is essential from here on in, if the train is to remain on the tracks that is. With that consideration, the opponent is about right.

Frank told me Clev's team said no! I begged for a rematch straight away.. Like I keep saying I don't feel I lost :-(dbf wrote:Feels like we have gone back 10 years to when Calzaghe was fighting the likes of Miguel Jimenez at Cardiff Castle, when we were told it would be Hopkins.

No offence T, but the consensus is that you lost to Clev.
You did enOugh for a rematch, mind.
I had it 114-113 with you leading after 10.

i wouldn't be aggrieved by scorecards 7-5 either way or 6-6. i think i just had clev nicking it but there was definitely at least 1 swing round in there.
Re: Nathan Cleverly opponent annouced
70-75 percent seem to have Clev EDGING it.
Consensus.
