how good was Mike Quarry

Post by Trent »

I havnt heard much about this guy, but by looking at his record, he had alot of wins against ordinary fighters then got knocked out by foster. After that loss his record doesnt look impressive. Was this fight the end of Mike? Was he classed as a great prospect leading up to the foster? any news about him now, and how he is going?

Mike Quarry was a very active fighter in the ring. Lot's of head and body movement, but he wasen't much of a puncher. His fight with Bob Foster was a total mismatch. Quarry was 36-0 at the time, but very few of his wins were against decent fighters. he had beaten Eddie Avoth and Andy Kendall by decision, but that was hardly preparation for one of the Light Heavyweight divisions all time greats.

Mike Quarry had quite a few fights after the Foster disaster, but he was beaten every time he faced a contender, with the one exception being his upset win over up and coming Mike Rossman.

The Mike Quarry- Bob Foster fight was on the undercard of the Ali-Jerry Quarry II fight in June of 1972. I remember Ali billing the card as The Soul Brothers vs The Quarry Brothers.

Foster's knockout of Mike Quarry was scary. Foster tagged him with a beautiful left hook right on the button and Quarry lay motionless on the canvas for several minutes after being counted out. The arena became very quiet until Mike was eventually revived.

Ali then went out and took Jerry apart for 7 rounds before he waived the referee in to stop the one sided affair.

Jerry as you know is no longer with us and the last I heard of Mike he was not doing well.

Thanks. :TU:

Watching the video of a 50 year old Jerry Quarry at The Hall Of Fame was very sad.
