I think that James has summed up my thoughts on Bunce, but the one thing i cannot understand is why people are so bothered about him. I personally would be quite happy for Jim Rosenthal and say two ex pro's such as Woodhall and Watt to present a boxing show and not have Bunce at all, but here i am talking about presenting at actual fights. I personally don't need to listen to Bunce on a fight show to get my opinions of how a fight will pan out. Bunce has a personlity and sometimes he comes out with good stuff and other times a load of old bollocks, but that is the same as all of us on this site, those of us who feel we have something to contribute. I know i have learn't more from posters on here than listening to Bunce.

The boxing shows that deal with interviews, fights, fighter analysis, like was the case with the one he did on Setanta can be good to watch, but equally it can be dross dressed up as entertainment. At the end of the day, most sports journalists like Bunce, Colin Hart etc may know a lot of fact and figures, they get around, they meet people, famous fighters, get on televsion, write articles in major newspapers, but does that mean that they know more than the most knowledgable posters on here ? Does it mean they can call a fight more accurately ? Can they articulate a fight plan to an audience ? Do they truely know about the arts of defence, attack, ring position, stance, punch choice and strategy ? I would say no and no more than we do !!

So, in the end, the television companies choose either ex fighters to pundit, combined with sports or boxing journalists who have been around a few years, preferably with a character or personality to match. Larry Mercahant is someone who springs to mind here too, so really your Bunce character is chosen for the casua sportsl fan, the type who doesn't know his ass from his elbow boxing wise, but likes to dip his toe in the water of the sport from time to time and a big personality helps to keep them entertained and keep tuned. Which is back to my original point, that who care s what Bunce does, says or writes about boxing, because whether you like him or not, his opinions are no more valid than Colin Hart or Jeff Powell from the daily papers.

Bunce is just a presenter, who acts like he feels people wish him to act and spouts opinions that are in tune with who he feels his core audience is and who employs him at that time. I am not saying he is some cluless dick who knows nothing, but he serves a purpose for a particular type of casual sports fan and we in general do not and will not benefit from listening or reading boxing articles by Steve Bunce, anymore than we do listening to Larry Merchant or reading Colin Hart. All this anxiety towards Bunce comes from the mans personality and the fact that he is on television giving it the big i am, ignoring tweets from Boxrec, but reading out those of Eastside !! Who cares ? For some good knowldege and opinion, look no further than this site.

He's on a boxing only subscription channel...how many casuals will even see him? If he's catering for the casuals then it's down right retarded, he needs to appeal to his audience who are boxing fans, people that do know their stuff to at least a decent level...

The amount of people going to watch a boxing show on television has to be made up of mainly casual sports fans who quite like boxing, not die-hards that are on this site and a few others. Without the casual fight fans boxing wouldn't make any money at all. A classic example is Ricky Hatton. How many of those fans know anything about boxing beyond the fact that they just love to seea tear up whilst pissed ? Hardly any, 10% if your lucky. Perhaps allegedly isn't an ideal choice to make my point, but most subscribers to sky or Sentanta did so for other reasons such as football or the films, plus they would check in if a fight sounded tasty enough, which is where a guy like Bunce comes in. The main point i am making is that you don't tune in as a die-hard fight fan to learn anything new off Steve Bunce, so i don't know why people see him as such a talking point for boxing.

On Setanta (and ESPN if he still works there) your point stands but on allegedly he simply shouldn't be there especially not in his current capacity as a host AND with his own show. If (and big if) he does attract casuals then he shouldn't be working for a boxing only subscription channel, I'd say he puts as many casuals off as he attracts personally as he seems like a loud mouthed shouty shouty fool, a bit like Joe Rogan for the UFC who is equally annoy though actually knows he stuff. Casuals are attracted by things liek newspaper and cross over appeal (think David Haye appearing on BBC News, all the newspaper build up etc etc).

He's a talking point for boxing because as stated, he's is basically the face of the only devoted boxing channel in the UK, he annoyingly seems to have so much power yet fails to do anything with it and instead shows a lack of integrity. Just wait for him to talk about how the Cleverly fight is good for boxing and you'll see what I mean when I question his integrity. Yes he's a mouth piece for the channel, though he could give a bit of credit where it's due rather than things like his rant about Sillahk (if Sillahk was facing Karpency we know what he'd say...). When this is the supposed face of the channel it's no wonder people think our sport is a joke.

The guy just seems generally false and inconsistent with his opinions and never brave enough to say anything negative even when it's the truth.

quixhall mate the main point your missing is Bunce is a figure of dislike around some here because of the trolling he did of knowledgeable members of this website....when times were bad for him he used the members of this site to prop up his "bring back bunce campaign"....than when he gets back on tv.....he suddenly went all big tyme and started coming on here randomnly trolling peoples posts, for no reason, trolling people who disagreed with him in the worst way. at first some of us thought somene had hacked his acct or he ws drunk but no.....it was just bunce showing us a side of the real bunce...lol what the guy doesnt understand is....the boxing net world doesnt revolve around him...when he was trolling he would say things like "ive got a boxing tv show so i know more about boxing than u"...@or what do you know about boxing to people who fought themselves and been following the sport for decades'......" and i earn more money than u"......well the only reason i attack bunce now and than is....its kinda !..I dont mean it in a nasty way tho just good online fun

You know pantomime Dames are usually played by men.

Steve has a part to play, he hams it up occassionally, injects enthusiasm which is often required when you have the insomnia cure of Piper, Nelson, McCrory to contend with.

Once you get the fact Steve is paying his mortgage playing a role you'll get a lot less upset.

The sport needs him, particularly when so many bills are not Hearns v Hagler and are contested for a belt of questionnable parentage.

That, my friend, is hyperbole of Bunce-like proportions.

Sorry Ali, but the other guys are right, some of the postings he made before 'retiring' from the forum were very poor. You can see some of his rants on Eastside as well where he continues to run both this forum and Ian down.

This is a bit like Celtic and Rangers Jon, if you like Celtic you hate Rangers and vice versa.................

Same with Bunce, people take sides. I personally couldn't give a shit about him either way. If he is on a fight i'm watching, so be it, i couldn't care less, but personally i think the guy has become a bit of bore of late.
