Jose Pedraza the Puerto Rican Lightweight who won silver at the 2009 Worlds turned pro a few weeks back and last week another Puerto Rican amateur star turned pro Jonathan Gonzalez he's only a little guy but I think he could be the guy to replace Calderon. He debuts on 1 April

2 top amatuer heavyweight pros, who have recently turned pro within the last year or so, is Joey Dawejko who is now 4-0 (1 ko), and Nick Kisner 7-0 (5 kos). Both are doing excellent

Stephon Young from STL turned pro a few weeks ago. Oscar Vasquez turned pro last weekend - both won UD. Both were top 8 fighters at 114 pounds.
Paul Romero and Abel Ramos are turning pro Friday night in Phoenix, Az.
Roman Morales has been pro for most of 2011, and has looked nice, 6-0 4 KO's. His team is moving him along great, scheduled to fight Friday night and then have his eight fight before the end of the month.

There are 7 weight classes to be filled on the US Olympic team and they will be selected from the winners of the U.S. Championships in March of next year. It is an open tournament - there will be no advancing tournaments leading to regional teams. Eligibility is a minimum of 5 scored bouts in your passbook, U.S. citizenship, and between the ages of 17 and 34.Im surprised that we havent heard word of more top amateurs turning pro after the trials. I've heard that Sammy Vasquez is turning pro in November. He used to be an Army boxer (and before that, from my LBC). I guess his military service is up.

Former two times AIBA jr world champion Keith Tapia (Cruiser-weight) turn pro Nov 18, 2011 beating Andrew Kuilan in San Juan, Puerto Rico by TKO in the first round. The fight can be seen in YouTube.com, "Keith Tapia vs Andrew Kuilan". A little overexcited but a kid to watch.

I was wondering what happened to him. I was in Azerbaijan with him for a junior tournament when he was around 16. He was exciting to watch. I look forward to see him progress.ricky wrote:Former two times AIBA jr world champion Keith Tapia (Cruiser-weight) turn pro Nov 18, 2011 beating Andrew Kuilan in San Juan, Puerto Rico by TKO in the first round. Johnny Garcia goes to 10-0 7ko with a unanimous dec. over 10-0-1 William "Action" Jackson in his home town of Cincinnati.
Re: Top amateurs turning pro in 2010 & 2011
Impressive win for Johnny Garcia. William Jackson is a good boxer. I remember him from the amateurs when he won the 2007 Midwestern Trials. Johnny is tenacious in the ring and that trait will serve him well in professional boxing.
Re: Top amateurs turning pro in 2010 & 2011
On Friday I saw Leandre "Blue" White make his pro debut at the Palace via 3rd round ko
Re: Top amateurs turning pro in 2012 (2010 & 2011 too)
I don't want to delete the old posts as it is fun to go back and see who turned pro and when. Then go and see how they are doing now. People think that amateur boxing doesn't get a lot of press, which it doesn't but compared to the early stages of a boxer's pro career it sure does. Many of the names on this list get forgotten by most except for their closest friends and families. Others just say things like "whatever happened to ____________ (insert name of boxer)?"

Ernie Garza made his pro debut last weekend. He won several Michigan Golden Gloves titles & a national title or two that I don't recall at the moment.
Re: Top amateurs turning pro in 2012 (2010 & 2011 too)
Ernesto "Ernie" Garza won the 2008 National Golden Gloves tournament. He also won a bunch of national junior titles. He and my son Jordan Shimmell both won 6 straight Michigan Golden Gloves State open-class Championships and went to 6 straight National Golden Gloves tournaments. They were teammates on all 6 National teams (2006 - 2011). Jordan will now try to break the record and then turn pro on May 19th.
