how did you all rate azumah nelson and how long would mcguigan have lasted??
looking back i can see a late stoppage for zoom zoom,he was at his peak at the time
mcguigan vs nelson
Re: mcguigan vs nelson
I think McGuigan was, wisely, steered away from Nelson. Nelson could outbox him him from range and could, in my opinion, actually out punch him, being the harder puncher, too.
Both had good chins but McGuigan was more limited, though was a clever slugger with a great jab. It's just that Nelson could more than match Barry in any department. It might not end in a stoppage, peak for peak, but a clear Nelson win, for me.

I thought this was a thread about the possibility of the two Sky pundits getting it on
However, I think Azumah Nelson wins fairly comfortably on points. But for me I would have wanted to have seen Nelson v Esparragoza more.

Re: mcguigan vs nelson
Nelson was obviously the man but Barry gets vey underrated these days. Getting inducted into the HOF, rightly or wrongly, has made people think less of him.
He was a wonderful swarming fighter who fought with intelligence. A great body puncher (and I mean great in the true sense of the word) with bags of stamina.
He wasn’t versatile like Nelson who had more than one way to win a fight.
My guess is that McGuigan would have been stopped because he was the kind of guy who would give everything. He had to go out on his shield. There was no other way. So I’d expect him to go out swinging in a close fight with some momentum swings. 14th or 15th round defeat.
Not impossible that Barry wins but Nelson is a firm favourite.

That's an excellent point... And something which I want to touch upon.Ezzard wrote:Nelson was obviously the man but Barry gets vey underrated these days. Getting inducted into the HOF, rightly or wrongly, has made people think less of him.
Since being inducted into the Hall Of Fame, McGuigan's name has been used a slate to The Hall -
"The HOF is going downhill because they let Barry McGuigan in"
and statements like it.
It's not that they dispute McGuigan's claim to The Hall (though some of them probably do)
- but they are now using his entry to damage The Hall's credibility.
And his name has become something of a joke, with some posters suggesting that he is the weakest fighter in The Hall, which I'm not sure if that's true...
Re: mcguigan vs nelson
McGuigan vs Nelson then?
Well Azumah is clearly the favourite, there's no doubt about that.
But I do think that McGugian has the tools to beat him...

I would expect Nelson to win this on points.
