ricky burns vs paulus moses confirmed

Post by fightscorecollector »

scottish stv news

Ricky Burns will defend his world title against Namibian boxer Paulus “the Hitman” Moses at Braehead on March 10.

The fight is the first defence of the interim WBO lightweight belt that Burns won against Michael Katsidis in November.

“He will be a dangerous opponent,” promoter Alex Morrison told STV. “He has several knockouts under his belt.

“He has won 28 out of 29 fights, so it will be a tough test for Ricky

“Crolla was on the cards but we couldn’t agree terms.”

Nineteen of Moses’ 28 wins came by knockout and the 33-year-old has previously been a world champion himself.

After winning the WBA lightweight belt against Yusuke Kobori in 2009, he successfully defended his title once but then suffered his first defeat came when he was being knocked out by Miguel Acosta in May.

“I think this will be a tougher test than Crolla would have been,” Burns’ trainer Billy Nelson said.

“If Ricky wants to be recognised as the worlds best lightweight then he’s going to have to face tough fighters. There’s no doubt Moses is in that bracket. He’s a former world champion with a very high KO percentage.”

STV has learned a prospective fight with Anthony Crolla fell through because of a disagreement over how the fight purse will be split. The all-British showdown has now been shelved in favour of a bout with Moses.

Quite suprised at this. Moses has proved he can travel and beat decent opposition. He got hammered off Acosta but he should be a tough proposition for Burns.

Just made a similar post on a different forum saying this. Whilst Moses hasn't beaten the most amazing of opponents his 2 best wins have been on foreign soil. Losing to Acosta is nothing to be ashamed by, just a shame Bam Bam ruined Miguel(watch his fight with Abril for proof of that).

Ricky is probably my favourite fighter at the moment and i'm glad this fight is happening.

He is going to have a great year i think and his popularity will only grow and grow with fights like this.

Credit to the sport as well.

When you're flogging subscription telly you need commodities to sell. Not bashed up at 4am former belt holders.

Great fight. Just hope the scottish fans turn out for him. Last couple fights over at the Braehead have been a poor showing. He deserves better support up here, for what he has achieved. It would be better served up at the Kelvin Hall. Although is promoter, is pushing to sell out a bigger venue. This only adds pressure to Ricky, in selling tickets for such a place. It's a hassle that you don't need, when training for a fight. Kelvin Hall, is easy to get to plus it is a better atmosphere there. Give us another great night Ricky. :D

Yeah credit where credit is due so i approve this match-up and will give Moses a decent chance of victory.

Moses did seem to get knocked out by Acosta from what appeared to be fairly innocuous punches but Ricky has no power so i'm pretty sure this will go the distance and be quite an entertaining fight that could possibly be the end of Burns too.

Be the end of Burns? not sure how you work that out even if he lost he has loads to offer moving forward. Like Froch, he would have to re-evaluate and learn from it thats all.

With regards to Mitchell winning if they fought (Not aimed at you but another poster)......hmmm, well i'm pretty sure many thought Katsidis would steamroller Ricky, but he didn't did he....in fact no where near.

Mitchell v Burns for me would be a great fight but i do honestly believe Burns has Mitchells number, and it also depends of course which Mitchell you get on the night.

We'll see hopefully soon if Burns can get rid of Moses, which i think he will.

I think this is a quality fight, probably 50/50 but Ricky has the home advantage.

Moses has travelled and won before and its not out of his reach to do it again.... big puncher and can take one as well.

Moses is mandatory on the commonwealth for the winner of ashie vs tba and isnt just another afrobum coming to get paid.

My prediction: Moses by tko in the last couple of rounds

Good match up. After beating Kat, it's good to see Ricky get a defence in front of his home crowd.
He should win this, though Moses is obviously a very decent boxer. His Hit man nickname is misleading though, he's never knocked out anyone with a decent record, but winning decisions on the road is impressive.

Watched his loss to Acosta and the SA commentary is so biased it's funny. "Hit man is biding his time, the other guy doesn't know what's coming, hit man's left hand is a thing of beauty..hit man lands again etc......Wait!! What's happened ?! Hit man is down !!" You've never heard such a shocked commentator. Moses then calmly sits out the count.
