Which Boxers Were You...

...once a fan of, but they lost you, turning you against them for whatever reason?

For me...

Judah- I was in on the hype. And then when he choked the referee after getting stopped I quickly became disenchanted and shortly thereafter I realized he was just a brain dead guy with hand speed.

Mayorga- Who didn't love him smoking in the ring after Forrest? Eating a drumstick on the scale? It may be hypocritical, but I have little patience for shit talkers that can't back it up where as someone like Ray Lewis makes me weak in the knees. The mouth for Trinidad and the ensuing beating was the end for me and then it turned into full blown hate with the aid of the internet fools who continue to champion him.

Mayweather & Pacquiao- Same story, bad asses that took on stiff challenges until they made it big and decided to play it safe and collect checks. I must say I was a much bigger fan of mayweather's when he was at 130 than I ever was of manny's. This is another example of internet influence as well, their pathetic fans drive me nuts. And manny knocked out Morales, that's an express lane to my hate wagon.

A few more in different degrees and I'll explain.

Ali- I grew up at the end of his career and I don't know of any 7 or 8 year old that didn't love him. As I grew up and learned more about him personally and saw the shit he did to Frazier I lost my love. He never lost me totally, I still consider myself a fan, but going from #1 to outside the top 50 or 75 probably fits in the context of the thread.

Corrales- The mouthpiece fiasco sullied a great fight for me. And after he crucified Castillo for missing weight and then did the same thing in his next fight he was dead to me.

Gatti- Who didn't love his fights? This is the biggest internet influenced change for me. Reading people act like he was actually an elite and HOF worthy fighter has driven me to detest him.

Michael Spinks- Great fighter, the 76 Olympics was my real coming out party into Boxing addiction( on that note I should mention leonard, it's not like I cheered against him in the Olympics when I was 7 and he later became my most hated fighter in pre-Dirrell history), but when he took a dive against Tyson I lost all respect for him. I know he didn't fight again, but my love is way gone to the point that I don't even watch his fights anymore.

Ah yes, the all-important distinction between pre and post-Dirrell history.

Also known as the, "Margarito Divide."

...spinks did not take a dive against tyson. he did something dumb when he got up from the first knockdown.....threw right hand against a shorter explosive puncher and got nailed by tyson's counter right....long time since i've seen it so i might be wrong on this particular point...but he did not take a dive...he was legitimately kayoed by a power punch.

Loved Ray Leonard up to the Lalonde fight. Then I took a dislike to him manipulating the sport, giving rematches to guys who should have had them 5 year earlier. I really was against him for a long time.

But when I see the guys fighting nowadays I’m warming to Ray again.

Got to disagree.

Spinks laid down like a lame dog. He quit voluntarily. Pure fear in his eyes before he feigns falling into the ropes.

One of you couldn't be more wrong. Good thing I was here to catch this error, and point out the problem.

The one who is wrong should seek atonement for their wickedness and go forward and sin no more.

A rare day when I disagree with your take, Jaclem (especially so staunchly), but I can only see fear, not concussion, in Spinks' eyes after the second knockdown.

Ok I'm convinced. Now I believe that no punch even landed and that his eyes clearly rolling back into his head was merely playacting. Rrrrrright, GI

In St Louis It was clear to those who knew The Spinks brothers that MS was both fearless and honest. Leon was zany, funloving, and a bit unpredictable, Mike was solid, stable and was known to stand up to gunslingers without flinching.

Slim to zero chance of fear or corruption.

privately giving up? After he was hit with a solid shot? Ala Liston in the second go round with Ali?

Possible but not likely. just too straight up of a person to be that complicated.
