Gone back and forth on it over the years, but these days I'm taking Arguello over 15. He'd be behind on points early, but Sanchez wasn't exactly the type to stay on the back-foot, and Arguello had a penchant for coming on strong down the stretch. I think those straight punches start to find their home more and more often as the fight goes along, leading to a close decision or a possible late stoppage (hard as it is to envision) for Arguello.

I've got Arguello winning this one too. Interesting to see if he could stop Sanchez. Id bet on a decision, but Arguello's power and precision were such a punishing combination, who knows?

Well, the great Ruben Olivares was beating Alexis but not by much. Now a prime Salvador Sanchez that could move from side to side and was much faster and had more stamina and chin than Olivares, I could see him win by decision. Sanchez might get rocked a couple of times, but he was very poised. Both fighters had great concentration. Sanchez cannot go and slug it out with a puncher like Arguello. If he does, goodnight. I have Sanchez winning this fight....Speed is the factor.

I agree. Sanchez by Decision. His style would have Arguello stymied/stumped and just not finding the mark.
Sanchez was extremely durable and relentless and patient. He would'nt get suckered into sluggin it out.
It would basically be a methodical clinic performance by the great Salvador Sanchez. Likely an 8-5-2 type fight at best, maybe even an 11-3-1 fight.

Absolutely could. Definately a most capable candidate. Look at what lil 5-4 Vilomar Fernandez did in the 1st bout with the 1 punch Ko specialist Arguello. He utilized the most effectiveness from his given style and Sanchez would utilize evrything it takes. The Mostly Crude brawler style of Ray Mancini was outboxing Arguello a good deal of that fight from what i recall. The Very limited Billy Costello was outboxing Arguello till the 5th round right bomb via carelessness and overconfidence by the very unsavy Costello. Arguello was quite exposable at least in certain definitive aspects of his overall game/style.

Arguello could be outboxed. The only way I think Sanchez loses this fight if he slugs it out toe to toe with a banger like Arguello. Well Alexis was not just power. He was an excellent technician with great poise like Sanchez, but did not had Sanchez' speed of hands and feet. Arguello had trouble with guys that can circle the ring. Maybe he was too flatfooted at times. And this was Alexis best weight class.
