Lou Gevinson's record

Post by sgev »

Your database on my uncle, Lou Gevinson, is incomplete and in a few places incorrect. My information comes from newspaper articles at the time of his fights. I wrote a summary of his boxing career more than 20 years ago, using family scrapbooks from his boxing days as my sources of information. The scrapbooks are fairly complete, and most of Lou's fights were covered in more than 1 local newspaper.

He was probably the most prominent Washington boxer of the 1930's. As an amateur he won 5 District A.A.U.-Golden Glove titles and built an amateur record of 72-6, all but 1 of the losses coming in national competitions. He was selected as the alternate featherweight on the 1936 Olympic team, but refused to accompany the team to Berlin as a "matter of principle."

Comparing your data to mine, I find the following professional fights missing:

11/29/36 vs. Al Shaeffer of Baltimore, scheduled for 6 rounds; Lou won by TKO in 5 (after knocking Shaeffer down 4 times and breaking his jaw in 2 places) -- Lou's 1st professional fight

12/13/36 vs. Benny Whittler of Baltimore; Lou won by KO in 1

12/?/37 vs. Tony Dupre; Dupre won a unanimous 10-round decision

2/?/39 vs. Felix Garcia of Puerto Rico; Lou won by KO in 3

9/?/39 vs. Nat Kadan (or Kadin) of Canada; Lou won by TKO in 8

I also found a few errors:

Lou fought Frankie Covelli on 9/20/37, not 10/12/37 as you have it.

Lou fought Pete Galiano in December 1938, not 8/2/38 as you have it; and the fight was in Washington, D.C., not in Philadelphia.

Lou fought Lew Feldman in Baltimore, not Omaha.

By the way, Lou lost to Pena and Sarron by split decision. All of his victories by decision were unanimous. His complete professional record was 12-6-0 (5 KO's).

That's it for additions and corrections. By the way, Louis Gevinson was born December 13, 1913, and died March 18, 1976.

I hope you will correct the record. Please let me know if you'd like more information. Thank you very much -- for your website and for your attention to this post.

One more correction:

On 10/18/37 Lou fought Danny London, not Benny London, as you have it.

Thanks.
