One of the Gym's that Sonny Liston worked out at
when he was based in Philadelphia PA from 1958-1961, was
Champ's Gym at 33rd & Dauphin in North Philadelphia.
I think another was Pat's Gym.
Liston was about 3 inches taller then Frazier, but had a 13 inch reach advantage.
(71 to 84 inches)I think Liston's jab alone would have rendered Frazier
dogmeat. However no one really knew at the time(1969) that Liston had switched from heroin to cocaine(im assuming he allegedly stop/used heroin
rumored of course,
after the cancelled fight in Boston with Ali November 1964.

BTW this month will mark the 50th anniversary of Joe Frazier
lacing up some boxing gloves. In late December 1961
he signed up to the PAL gym(Police Athletic League)
22nd and Columbia Philadelphia, and in early January 1962
he came in to it to begin working out and the rest is history.
Most likely outcome is its like the foreman fight. Liston a huge puncher and he'd find joe. There's a chance Frazier could get in first but I'd take sonny by stoppage.
When Liston was on the comebcak trail after the Lewiston fight, after his 7th round KO victory over Henry Clark he talked about fighting Frazier, saying it would be like "Shooting fish in a barrell." Of course, some time later after 14 consecutive victories, he was defeated by Leotis Martin in the heavyweight title tournament.
Maybe some rough going for Frazier over the first 4-5 rds, but after he weathers the storm and turns the tide, the left hooks will begin wearing Liston down. Frazier by TKO very late.
BTW The very same George Johnson that had taken Joe Frazier a full ten rounds
just exactly 2 years earlier.
BTW Has anyone yet come across the full seven rounds of Liston vs Johnson?
Personally I like to see the full entire fight broadcast of it.
As if Im watching it live on TV back in 1969.
The athmosphere and flavour and such.
Both in their prime I thing this would be a gruelling fight for both men FRAZIER would be staggered a couple of time's in the first 3 round's
but with pure determination would claw his way back into the fight and stop LISTON in 11 unbelievable round's
how does liston hit harder than frazier? that left hook is one of the greatest and hardest punches ever seen in a ring. which punch of listons do people talk about like they do about joe's iconic cruncher
I'M new here but in this thread there are people who know about boxing and others who are clueless.Joe Frazier is only a foil to Ali and any real punchers would slap him silly like Foreman did.He had trouble with Oscar Ie Ringo Bonavena who was shot and killed in a brothel.Fraziers only win of note was against Ali.Jimmy Ellis Jerry Quarry are glass jawed fighters made to order for Frazier.Bonavena almost beat him.Bonavina had above average power.Frazier like Patterson was carefully managed and the likes of Shavers Lyle were kept from him until they took Foreman and Frazier was pummelled into Oblivion.Liston a more skilled and harder puncher than Big George would knock Frazier out in round 1 in 1-3 knockdowns.Liston would have crushed Ali if the mob and boxing powers did not order Liston to take a dive.Newly realeased FBI reports from the time said that the fight was fixed from spying the FBi was doing at the time due to reports that the fight was being fixed before the fight. We are talikng the first fight not the blantant obvious phatom Punch fix of the seecond fight.Frazier camp would not even consider fighting liston post Ali fights because Fraziers camp knew punchers would starch smoking Joe.Frazier was like Norton a good foil for boxers but a feast for any good punching heavyweights.
by heck you're right - there are people on here who are absolutely clueless
whats the bonavena death history got to do with anything? we've all known that for years. the liston mob stuff? my advice stick to the facts about boxing and leave the sociology to those who really know.

Quarry was glass jawed, right?
And Frazier's camp knew punchers would starch Smoking Joe, right? Then why did they give Foreman a shot?
You don't know what the hell you are talking about.
