Is it true that Wepner actually managed to knockdown George before getting stopped. i've heard some reports about that. does anyone know the truth behind that?

Wepner IS credited with a knockdown of Ali. Actually resulted in more of a push, and to the body at that, but his glove did make contact with Ali and Ali's glove did touch the canvas, so by the strictest interpretation it counts.

Actually, a Boxing News magazine issued shortly after the fight shows Wepner's FOOT on ALI's!!!! A VERY clear photo.
when he threw the punch.

The ref's decision stands, so it IS a knockdown. Just as Marvin Hagler was knocked down aganst Juan Roldan.
