What is going on with NZ heavywieght titles?

Post by Fejoa »

Can someone please explain the NZ Heavyweight titles to me?

I thought there were only two NZ heavyweight titles, the NZNBF held by Chauncy Welliver and the vacant NZPBA soon to be fought over by SBW and Tillman. Chauncy will be defending his against Moyoyo Mensah on the 28th Jan.

Now the NZNBF HWT according to Boxrec has been going since 2005:
http://boxrec.com/title_search.php?titl ... &SUBMIT=Go

And NZPBA sinec 1982:
http://boxrec.com/title_search.php?titl ... &SUBMIT=Go

In the two upcoming fights one of the boxers is an American who now calls NZ home. I have no problem with this, but I guess it shows a lack of depth for the NZ titles. But what is confusing me is on the Chauncy undercard is yet another NZ , the heavyweight title bout, the NZBC, fought between 47 year old American Billy Wright and 48 year old American Harry Funmaker. This is also the first time the belt will be contested????
http://boxrec.com/show_display.php?show_id=634362

Now I know it seems these anyone can make a title but is this bordering on the ridiculous?

There has been a lot of debate over whether SBW should be contesting the NZPBA in only his 5th fight and some saying it is a circus, but surely this NZBC title is making more of a mockery of NZ heavyweight boxing??? Can anyone tell me what is going on with this belt?

Why can't a country with the population of New Zealand have three different men claim that they are HW Champion, what is wrong with that :OhYes:

NZNBF, NZPBA & NZBC have been around for yonks & at war ever since  . However, NZBC has been somewhat inactive for many years.
Until a few years ago only NZ title existed in Boxrec's system & version (if known) was inserted in comment section.

Let us also not forget that if David Tua isnt the best New Zealand fighter in the world i am not sitting here.

Also, a little known fact is that Monte Barrett actual owns the New Zealand lineal heavyweight championship.

It is all absolutely ridiculous.

I'd say NZBC was resuscitated 'cos of PABA shite. Local PABA rep Frank Martinez was NZBC's office bearer & will no doubt supervise both crap titles.

About 100 years ago Americans fought for the Australian heavyweight title.

Sam Langford was an outstanding example. He won it from fellow American Sam McVea. Canadian former World champion Tommy Burns also held the Australian title.

IMO - You should have to hold a passport of the country which title you are fighting for to be eligible. Or at the very least be able to prove residency status.

i had the pleasure of being in wellington last year for the national amateur champs. four days of tournament boxing, with a record number of over 200 young boxers contesting for there respected weight divisions.one weight one champ, alltogether in one place at one to decide who's best. yet not one contest in 91+ super heavyweight.the sport of boxing is healthy in nz and the true lovers of the sweet science are committed to the sport not the lure of the all mighty $$$$$$. take the time to compare those running pro boxing and those running the amateurs.you would be pleasantly surprised to know that the grass roots are in good hands.it is a pitty about the state pro boxing i must agree.

I believe in most countries the requirement is resident status. Having to hold that country's passport seems a bit too strict.

ok,all bs aside .lets look at the problem,to many titles for novices trying to make money for promoters that have never and will never lace a glove.as lazy as he can be tua's to good to even consider.welliver's as good if not better then any australian heavyweight and joseph parker in the amateur ranks is word class.were simlpy at point were we have sit back and watch monkeys pay good peanuts to watch sonny bill beat on some pensioner until he gets beyond the novice stage of his career.titles sell tickets ppv or live.just don't let your self be one of those monkeys.

Well I guess I must be one of those monkies because I'm going to it, I think Tillman will win as well and I don't think it's for any New Zealand title anyway because he doesn't have residency. And I f*ckin hate corporate boxing.

It does sell tables to help promoters, but I think local so called pro boxing regulators should implement restrictions e.g. for every 2 pro bouts it'll allows 1 corporate.

Most of the shows I've been to over here it's atleast 3 Corporate boxing bouts to each professional (usually with a couple of am. fights inbetween) sometimes even 4-1. But I appreciate that the show wouldn't go ahead without them so I try and turn up as late as possible. At the ABA Stadium as I'm sure you know they have alot more am. fights and then a few professional fights at the end, ofcoarse it's much better but I can't see them making any sort of profit. It was a great post about grassroots kiwi boxing earlier but if we're being honest there'll never get rich in N.Z. Or let's face it in Aussie either. They'd do well to make a living.

Be farked if I know how this show is gonna cover its costs
http://boxrec.com/show_display.php?show_id=634362
Regional title sanction fees & associated costs alone will send it to cleaners

I couldn't imagine NZNBF & NZBC under same roof. Besides, NZBC had died years ago, leaving NZNBF & NZPBA to continue the war  and I'm here to tell ya Israel/Palestine conflict has got nothing on them
