Yes, here i am with my almost 6 monthly up-date threads on the progress of Nikki Smedley.

I thought that Nikki was supposed to fight around november or December time ? Did he fight or was the fight cancelled or re-arranged to a different date ?

Also, where is Nikki training now ? Is he still with Dennis Hobson ?

Where was Nikki training when he fought Khan as an amateur ? Was he, or has he ever trained over at Brendan's ?

I'm hoping to see Nikki fight a few times this year, stay fit and make some progress towards some title fights

Maybe the best person to ask is Chris Smedley !! Can you supply this info Chris ? Cheers mate

Nicki was training with me when he boxed khan in 2004,he did have a spell at brendans and boxed twice for unity and lost them both,he was 12 then,as for training now,truth be known hes doing nothing,and i dont know what hes got planned i know his girlfriend is pregnant and hopefully the thought of a new baby might bring him back to the gym,i dont ask him anymore but i know its such a waste of talent but unless he has the desire to box and the hungryness id sooner him stay out,i have argued and talked to him but that hasnt worked even telling him to go to brendans but we never make progress in our talks,so the best thing is for me to leave him be until he makes his own mind up,but i told him time is running out

Id have thought he would be wanting to get back in the ring after a decent showing against Wright,but as you say if his heart aint in it 100% best stay away..

the thing is tommy he knows he could have beaten nigel wright and id have thought the same,hes a couple of fights away from bigger fights and if he could give 100% in training for 6 to 8 weeks and do everything right then hed win titles but in the end i stopped talkin about boxing to him,

Great, honest post Chris. That's a real shame because Nicki has always looked a talented kid. If moving to Brendans' and working with Kell and Kid Galahad wouldn't inspire him then maybe nothing would.

no tommy i dont let it get to that,it has done in the past because its hard to sit back and watch your son throw away something what he is good at,but there is no one more dissapointed than me as iv trained him since 2002 but whatever i say or do i cant make him box,and until that day comes when he says he wants it i will just be a dad,and a grandad when the littlen comes

i just got 2 young pros now and thats hassan ahmed 3-0 and kyle winters 1-0,but my youngest son has just got a new gym so the temptation of workin with a new bunch of amateur kids is very tempting,i loved doin the amateurs although you are always losing money and you have no time,i did it for 12 years and loved every minute,but id like to help him build this gym and make it into a successful one,but i know how much dedication is needed,as i left steel city gym in capable hands it was hard to let go when you know that your the one who started everything off,so turning out more amateur champs would give me the buzz again,i think my time with the pros as opened my eyes to alot of things but working jamie macdonnells corner with bully dave hully and dennis as been an honour and valuable experience as gone in to the bank and if they still want me too i will be there,...but see what this new year brings u never know

Thanks for the reply Chris, i really appreciate that mate. As Pugulist has said, a very open and honest post. It is such a shame about Nicki because he has undoubted talent, but as others have said, if he hasn't got the hunger then boxing is the wrong sport to be in. Nice to know you are still involved in the sport and it seems as if you have done a very good job with the amateurs, so i wish you well if you get involved with your son's new gym. I will hope that Nicki has a change of heart and tries to realise some of his potential, in the mean time, all the best Chris

love your honesty and i wish Nicky and his new family all the best, good luck to yourself too...but shit the boy has talent to burn, is he working at present?

One day, i bet he would love to tell his son/daughter that he was British Champion!! and he has the talent to do so!! he needs to realise in and knuckle down and achieve what he can while he is still young enough, when he is 35 he will regret what he did not do when he was younger!!

come on Nicky, see sense!! dont waste your god given talent, give it a good go for another 4 years or so. its what dreams are made of!!!

thanks a lot and I will always be involved in boxing as a trainer. My 2 pros are a dream to train and are progressing,hassan is a super fly weight and 19y old,he as been with me since 13 year old and had a great stoppage win over andy roberts in his 3 win,kyle is a welter who in his first fight got a first round ko win over imrran khan x world champ kick boxer . But I do miss amateurs and I know I could help make another ABA champion
