Hand wrapping

Post by Atom Bomb »

Seen people do loads of different and sometimes pointless stuff.

Personally, I prefer the mexican stretch wraps, they seem to fit way more snug as opposed to the stiff lonsdale traditional material. The everlast version are a bit on the shortside though.

I'll go 3 round the wrist, 1 round thumb and wrist, 1 round the knuckles across the top of the hand, 1 more on the wrist then between each set of fingers, lock it in around the knuckles then use the spare around the the wrist. If my knuckles are sore from rubbing I've got some foam material I'll throw in.

I know gauze and tape is popular with the pros, just way too expensive for me.

What do you guys do?

I'm genuinely surprised that given the pace of innovation no-one has come up with something more effective in recent years e.g. a gel. I assume it's because the market isn't big enough to attract the sort of R&D budgets that other areas do...

Mainly do to the rules of hand wrapping with governing bodies.

How would a gel work though, the point of the tape is to lock the bones of the hand into position, so that on impact the hand deforms as little as possible.

As a matter of interest I once watched Audley Harrison getting his hands bandaged before one of his early professional fights by his American trainer . They complied with regulations and his opponents trainer did not have an issue .But , once the initial bandage had been round a few times , the trainer placed an entire bandage across the knuckles and then continued winding the bandage over it . Believe it or not he then placed a second full bandage over the knuckles and wound the existing bandage round it again tightly . A remember thinking surely big Audley didn't need that amount of protection for his knuckles !!

I've seen a guy use a handwrap with a foam knuckle pad (with finger holes) attached to one end. It was pretty weird but I guess it was a good idea.

Anyone seen people use duct tape? I've heard of it being done but I've never bothered to try it myself. I imagine it hurts.

The everlast gel hand things are absolute shite apparently, very little support on the wrists and handbones.

Does anyone sometimes have problems with the thumbs on sparring gloves? I've connected with the side of my thumb when throwing a hook occasionally and it hurts like hell.

They do have gel wraps for training though, but for fighting you have to go by the guidlines of your official governing body, mind you they do differ from country to country, only slightly, normally, but there are exceptions, mainly places like Mexico, where they do allow layer building.

Yes mate, but for training some people just use them for the bags as an extra cushion.

Are you sure it was not Thai Boxing trainer doing his hands, seems like layer building to me, not allowed, surely.

Derry broke his nose against rees with an accidental head class and then it went again in training leading up to this fight, maybe he should have cancelled and re-arranged or maybe he should have called it a day, he has had some hard fights and an injury like that may never fully heal up.

I've got and have used various gel types like the Everlast or added gel wraps/guards to the wraps but much prefer the longer length Mexican style jobs.

I wrap my own hands but find it hard to go through/between the fingers without them getting very uncomfortabe or even ripped up? Any ideas on how to do this well.

Also, how do people cope with wraps, tape and foam and still get the gloves on - I struggle to get my XL gloves on just with wraps.

Don,t put it between your fingers, it opens your fingers when you punch, could cause problems with your fingers, instead use half inch or cut 1 inch tape and stick over first layer of wrap, between fingers, then cover with second layer of wrap, this will stop the wraps being pushed up the hand when forcing gloves on.
