The artist Thomas Eakins did some great boxing paintings. he was also one of the earliest phtographers , he saw how photography could convey the movement of the body and wasn't just for portrait style pictures.

A book called 'Boxing: A Cultural History' by Kasia Boddy is full of great paintings, illustrations and the stories behind them. Loads of great fight posters too.

Mayers reminds me of Robert Riggs, he was around in the 30's and did alot of boxing painting, he used to over elaborate the size of the people in his painting, and i think Mayers does this slightly as well.
