Is Burns now WBO champ?
Is Burns now WBO champ?
On WBO website, where there are pictures of their champions, Ricky is there and Marquez has been removed. Last time I was on that site, both fighters were pictured with it saying Burns is interim.
Boxrec still got Burns vs Moses down as interim title fight.
Anyone shed any light?
Edit: there is an empty space for 'interim lightweight'

Re: Is Burns now WBO champ?
Marquez is now ranked no 1 at Welter weight. So he is.

Should Marquez have been allowed to hold onto the title forever without defending it?

WBO Have always called it that, the name hasn't caught up but they've never changed it to join the real world.The_Don1 wrote:since when is cruiserweight now called Jr. Heavyweight??!

Alex Arthur became world champ in the same manner, then lost his first 'defence' against Nicky Cook.
Re: Is Burns now WBO champ?
Yeah, what a coward
It's not ideal to be crowned a champion like this, but beating Katsidis makes him a worthy title-holder (by today's diluted standards).

Re: Is Burns now WBO champ?
As did Cleverley. So that means "all" our current boxing world champions won their titles this way.G0mez wrote:Alex Arthur became world champ in the same manner, then lost his first 'defence' against Nicky Cook.
Fair play to Ricky though. There has not been that many two weight British World Champions.

I must admit I had to do a double take as well when I saw it as well.The_Don1 wrote:since when is cruiserweight now called Jr. Heavyweight??!
Re: Is Burns now WBO champ?
I thought Katsidis would beat him and was happily proven wrong.
Prior to the fight, Kat was seen as world-level, now he's been beaten he's a bum ? I don't buy that myself, it was a very polished performance by Ricky and it was a good win.

Re: Is Burns now WBO champ?
if they had fought for a vacant title, fair enough. but being handed a belt is a serious embarrassment.
Re: Is Burns now WBO champ?
The WBO announcement is an irrelevance. We all expected Burns's next fight to be for the title. Whether he enters the ring as champion or not is a mere footnote. The winner of Burns's next fight will be the WBO champion and that's how the records will read.
If the standard of the opponent is good enough i don't care. If he loses, he will have only ever been an Interim champ. This is clear.

Re: Is Burns now WBO champ?
At least he beat Katsidis and not some 'Ghanian hardman' for the interim belt.

Kevin Mitchell is a bum and ironically Katsidis best win. Booooring.
You must have cleaned up at the bookmakers for that fight. How much did you put on Burns to win?

Re: Is Burns now WBO champ?
It was downright crocked in the old days, when they'd bump a nobody into the upper reaches of the top ten prior to the impending announcement, the next month, that the guy was cannon fodder for the next voluntary defence by that organisation's champion - at least there was an attempt to make things look like remotely legit, even if we always knew what was really going on.ScottDetonator wrote:What a crock of shite.leforge wrote:Tommy Karpency now WBO no 10 at light heavy
These days they just don't even give a fxxk enough to even attempt to mask what they are doing - the promoter announces the fight, the champ tells the press it'll be a tough challenge, and the alphabet body slips the no-hoper into the rankings next time they do the monthly reshuffle of the top ten contenders. To anyone not conversant with how bad the sport is run, this looks like the tail is wagging the dog - the promoter wants cheap, unthreatening cannon fodder for a lucrative home coming show, and the WBO tidy up the rankings a month later. In terms of the sport being a business, its totally understandable, but in terms of serving up shite as a world title fight, this is so bad I hope the promoter goes broke

And to answer your question, it's not how many titles you win, it's who you beat. Rocky Martinez is a good win. Katsidis is an OK win. Ducking Adrien Broner on the other hand is deplorable. That's not what real champions are about.[/quotewhats with the english like ya . . . . . cant think ..of out to call ye ha .
