Moorer comeback or not

Post by Old bones Ian »

Former two-time heavyweight champion Michael Moorer announced his comeback on ESPN2's "Friday Night Fights" telecast, but his comeback only lasted about forty-five minutes. In a moment of some drama, Moorer was convinced on the air by fight analyst Teddy Atlas (his former trainer) to retire again.

Comeback? I never thought he retired.

His win over Jirov is a decent one - probably one of the Lewis generation of Heavyweights who I don't mind seeing back in the ring. His recent form hasn't been too bad. He can certainly be in the mix if promoted right.

He'll be back.

I hope he doesn't, i mean you have Moorer, McCall, Bowe, Holyfield etc even Tony Tubbs still lingering around. Do they seriously think they are going to reclaim past glories? Or are they all stone broke? They will just get hurt or end up going nowhere. Moorer was a electric as a Light Heavy but he never did anything as a Heavyweight in his prime.

I think Moorer is done for good. He is way past his prime and doesn't need to prove anything else in the ring. I heard that he has the early makings of a good trainer. He could do that and still be a big part of boxing. He seemed sincere about staying away and I hope he does. I think he need to share his common sense with Bowe, Holyfield and many others.........

Yeah Michael twice held versions of the title, he won the IBF and WBA titles. Unfortunatly for him he will probaly be remembered for losing the heavy title by knockout to George Foreman.
I think he was at his best as a light Heavy where he was a completly devastating puncher, won the WBO title and defended it 8 times all by knockout, but the trouble with making weight got to him and he stepped up to heavy.

Exactly, which is why the suggestion he never did anything in his prime at heavyweight strikes me as a little harsh.

There are few fighters even in these times of multiple belts who lay claim to that, and didn't he beat Evander Holyfield to do it!

He wants to be a trainer, he should concentrate on that.

He also won the WBO Heavyweight title against Bert Cooper but I dont think he ever defended it. And he was the first ever WBO Light Heavyweight champion, he was devastating at 175 scoring KO/TKO's in pretty much every fight.

i i remember correctly the fight against Cooper was a great one , with both boxers getting knocked down , also Moorer v Stewart is well worth adding to any collection of fights

Yes they were both on the deck in the first round. That was some fight. Not long before that you may recall Cooper had decked Holyfield for the first time. Cooper was certainly value for money!

Yeah it was a bit harsh to suggest he didn't do anything as a Heavyweight and i take that back, he did beat Holyfield and was beating Foreman before that big shot. He was more effective as a Light Heavyweight though i seem to remember.

He was just too physically weak to compete with the big boys. Did well against Holyfield because he was small and fast and able to give Holy fits. The bigger punchers of the division gave him a lot of problems though.

It's a shame he didn't stay at LH longer, he was a murderer there.

I really think he would have gone on to be one of the best light heavyweights in history if he'd stuck around there. He was devastating at 175.

Probably not....

If he ever does come back to fight, it will be after a few years, to get some extra pocket change....

Foreman knocked him out, and the rest of those guys, were nothing special. Smith was ancient when he fought Moorer, and as for Foreman....

He hit Foreman with everything but the kitchen sink and didn't even dent him at all, then eat two big shots and was out. Foreman was slower than shit through a funnel too by then.

Moorers best win was undoubtedly over Holyfield, for which he deserves credit, but he was too small a heavyweight to ever reign for long. His power was special at LH, but at heavyweight he couldn't bang with the best in the division, his chin and defence were also less than top notch.

Winning 9 rounds doesn't mean shite if you're knocked out in the 10th, it's like leading the 400 meters coming round the bend and then coming in last.

Big fornicating deal. Who the hell did budge Foreman in his entire decade long comeback?

Georges words after the fight "he had power. Every shot he hit me with shook my whole body"

Any guy who can put dents in Holyfield and Foreman is obviously a big puncher. In the 1994 fight Moorer hurt Holyfield more than Tyson did in 14 rds of fighting him.

The guy didnt score many knockouts because he was stayed out of wars after the Bert Cooper fight and played it safe. Nobody dominated Foreman like Moorer did in Foremans entire comeback although as we know Moorer eventuially lost. The exact same rules dont seem to apply with Klitschko and Lennox Lewis though i have noticed.

Moorer will come back, no doubt.

Knocking out Jirov, which JT & Mesi couldnt do, set him up for one last big payday but then he went and retired. Very strange fella...

Gerrie Cooney shook Big George up I seem to recall, not that there is too much disgrace in that, Cooney had a vicious left hook. But George also proved like he did against Lyle that he could comeback after taking a big shot.

Whilst on this subect didn't Ken Lakusta rattle Foreman briefly to?

What about Alex Stewart - he came back from a terrible start to look unlucky to lose at the end.

Foreman's face was a mess that night but cannot remember if his legs went at all.
