Which Joe Louis Is This?

Post by Ric »

I have an EVERETT DAILY HERALD newspaper article of Jan. 15, 1937, reporting bouts from the night before. It reports that out of Minneapolis this bout, quote:
"Joe Louis, 206, Detroit, knocked out Tiger Frank Thompson, 204, Decatur, Ill. (1)."
Which Joe Louis is this?

March 11, 1937 @ Denver, CO, USA: TKO2(4). Cecil (Seal) Harris "ended a scheduled four-round exhibition bout with Louis in the second round last night when he ran from the ring after being knocked down six times. 'Did y'all evah get kicked by a mule?' the pouchy Negro moaned. 'Well, suh, that's just the way it feels when Joe lands. And boy, he lands plenty often.'" (UP), as reported by the March 12 EVERETT DAILY HERALD.

Plus, KO-(round number not reported) Eddie Mechome same date & location.

April 1: Bouts occurred in Ontario, California, not Canada. EVERETT DAILY HERALD, quoting United Press: "It took Joe Louis, the Detroit heavyweight, only one minute and 28 seconds to catch Leonard Dixon with a knockout punch last night. Climbing into the ring for the second of the two scheduled two-round exhibitions, Seal Harris caught a right smash from Louis and dropped for nine counts but managed to weather it out."

Why is it that exhibitions then resulted in KOs?

I thought exhibitions were just that - GLORIFIED sparring sessions going the distance?

Not always Phil. Remember when George Foreman fought 5-3 round exhibitions in one night. The opponents were decent journeyman and George knocked the first three out. Terry Daniels, JerryJudge and someone I can't remember right now were KOed . Charlie Polite and Boone Kirkman went the 3 round distance.
