You know what i was having this conversation with Roger Sampson not so long ago.It wasn't as if he totally became a bad fighter when he turned pro either but just underachieved for a double aba champ who could really box. Strange onepalooka wrote:I agree; Alan Temple was a fantastic amateur and as a pro; while a strong and decent fighter, never hit the heights expected. I'm not sure why; he was a really good fighter.

Cheers; Alan had a decent punch a well and a lot of bottle. Do you know what he's up to now? thought he got involved in training but not really seen much for years, or Peter Richardson, (another fantastic amateur; I imagined he would do ever so well + Allan Hall, very talented boxers).manno wrote:You know what i was having this conversation with Roger Sampson not so long ago.It wasn't as if he totally became a bad fighter when he turned pro either but just underachieved for a double aba champ who could really box. I was going to mention Richardson. He was a very good boxer, just had eyebrows made of tissue paper.

I think Johnny Nelson has to be near the top of any list, wasn't his amateur record something like 3-10
Re: British champions who never won an Amateur tidle
Chris Saunders, Geoff McCreesh Harry Dhami, Dennis Andries, Dean Francis, Scott Dann, Steve Robinson; there are loads of excellent fighters that did very well but weren't great as an amateur.

I think Johnny Nelson lost 10 of 13 bouts as an amateur. Michael Lomax who was a successful amateur has failed to ignite in the pro's

One of the best amateur fights i ve seen was Richardson v Mcarrick in the old northern counties final, styles meshed so well. Richardson also beat the late Vernon Forrest in Atlanta. As for Hall i boxed him as a 15 yr old in schools quarters, He'd already had 54( w50 L4)....not a lesson i forgot in a hurrypalooka wrote:Cheers; Alan had a decent punch a well and a lot of bottle. In the latest Boxing Monthly you'll see that little Chris Edwards is one.
Re: British champions who never won an Amateur tidle
garry and mark dellaney might not have won abas but mark was defo an irish international and think he won irish abas and garry was a good amateur even if he didnt win a senior title he surely won schoolboy and junior titles and maybe irish titles
scott dann if i remember rightly beat naz as a junior amateur naz did not fight as a senior did he
there are loads of fighters who have won pro titles british commonwealth ect but not won the abas people like pat barrett michael watson ect not sure if even lloyd honeyghan won an aba remember joey frost doing him in abas but he was still a very good amateur

Scott Dann won the ABAs in 1996 at middle or light middle I think.
Alan Temple is still involved in the game as a trainer at the late Gus Robinsons gym in Hartlepool

Did Scott Gammer, Julius Francis, Danny Williams, Pele Reid and Mike Holden all win ABA titles?
Re: British champions who never won an Amateur tidle
That must have been 1985/86; Hall was class, no disgrace to lose to someone like that. Very precocious.manno wrote:One of the best amateur fights i ve seen was Richardson v Mcarrick in the old northern counties final, styles meshed so well. Cheers; I didn't know that Scott had won the ABAs; I did know that Garry was a very decent junior and Mark had won an Irish national title; Jason Rowland was another one as was Bernard Paul.marbles wrote:garry and mark dellaney might not have won abas but mark was defo an irish international and think he won irish abas and garry was a good amateur even if he didnt win a senior title he surely won schoolboy and junior titles and maybe irish titles

With the exception of Errol Graham, pretty much anyone who has ever come out of the Ingle gym.
Their style has never been popular with the ABA. Amateur referees and judges are not big fans of hands down boxers.
