its all about palate anyway, i tend to prefer the reds that burst with flavour, but depends on my mood and whjther i am eating.

I wouldnt just drink a shiraz without food, far too heavy, but a blended shiraz you may be able to do so and get a full bodied wine that isnt too oakey and full of tannins.

Im a big fan of blended grapes.

also a little teaser for you, anyone know why red wine is red and white wine white??? (Slapsie not you i know you will know).

Interestingly enough, I am moving towards varietals rather than blends as I am trying to develop a palate for the intrinsic characteristics of certain grapes ( Vigionier and Pinot Noir at the moment ) and the way that they are affected by oak ( both new and old oak and both French and American which give totally different nose and feel ) ageing and closure.

Some of the classic blends ( rioja, Chateau Neuf, Chianti etc ) are great though

I have yet to make my mind up on the cork/synthetic/screwcap debate. I do think screwcap closures are more than acceptable for young wines to be drunk immediately, but, that type of closure does not lend itself to wines that need to age and, there is recent evidence of tainting on wines that are kept over two years

An article in the independent the other day said that the vast majority of wines should be drunk within a year. Modern processes do not lend themselves to wine which improves in the bottle, and that most wines which were more than two years old were inferior to how they would have been when first bottled.

certainly true of modern styles and the new world

Less true of classic regions and styles made in the traitional method

The problem is that ageing in oak takes time and does not produce the volume to make such wines profitable any more. So, modern styles to have bottles on the table within 2 years are taking over

This, I think means that some of the great variety of the great wines is being lost in favour of immediacy. Tends to produce what I call "show wines" wines that shout out of the glass, have a huge fruit nose, are often reeking of new oak but have little depth or substance

Most of these flatten out to undrinkability within two years

Some of these can be great with food, but sometimes you crave something that does not remind you of a bratty child.

These old world makers ( and some of the tope end new world makers ) are having to "boutique" their best wines. make smaller amounts, and charge top $$ for them. expensive, but now and again, they are well worth the effort and cost

1978 ( I think ) went to see Sabbath in Birmingham

Support band came on. Me in bar with a can of red stripe ( thrilled as 14 at the time )

Support band sound good. Go back to auditorium to see David Lee Roth leaping off the speaker stands legs akimbo. Eddie Van Halen rips into the opening chords of " Running with the Devil" place goes a bit mental

4 encores. crowd still cheering for VH when Sabbath are on

Result= next day Vh thrown off the tour and replaced by a metal band called Krokus

Always loved DLR. Got to like a man who says his fave woman is one who can F**k until midnight and then turn into an pizza and a six pack :TU:

I wish someone had torn the drummers other arm off, and both his legs. And his cock, as He'd probably have strapped a drumstick to his cock to carry on.

not the early stuff

They did a self released ep in 1979/1980 called get yer rocks off which rocks.

I used to see them play in Sheffield around that time. Bizarrely enough, they always used to support Saxon!! Whiter the wheels of steel meisters now?

Both were part of NWOBHM

That was me - in fact I was having a beer with his pilot mate last night in same local, and Bruce texted him to say he was missing the local beer.

You'd think he has other things on his mind seeing as he's in Vegas touring the good ol USofA

Gonna hit him for tickets for their final night at Hammersmith Apollo, so we can see first hand what the backstage groupie situation is :TU:

You could say it was the granfather of reggae. First there was Ska, then rocksteady (Sometimes called Bluebeat in the UK) and then Reggae.

Ska started in the late 50's early 60's and was at first a mixture of Jamacian Folk, Mento, Calypso and R&B music.

In a nutshell it's a rawer, rougher, faster more dancable version of 'mainstream' reggae eg Bob Marley.

Famous Ska acts include Prince Buster, The Skatalites and Desmond Dekker.
I heard that it was the Jamaican's interpretation of boogie woogie type RnB listened to via the weak radio signal from America.

There might be something to it because early ska sounds similar to Fats Domino's sound doesn't it?
