Stephen Smith

Returns after a nightmare performance against Lee Selby on the undercard of Vitali v Delboy, shame it never got announced sooner id of gone over. Back to winning ways for Smith and a rematch to get his belts back later in the year.

If he sticks to using his boxing and not standing still in front then i fancy his chances against Selby

I think Stephen should join Olivers or Dave Coldwell.. Better technical coaches than Gallagher, just my thoughts..

Smith is a very fit and well schooled boxer. At the level below British Title level he has shocking punch power. Smith was very lucky to get the decisions v John Simpson;they were very well matched but (for me) Smith was out muscled and out manned. Selby looks too rugged, confident and has a raw boned strength that Stephen will really struggle against. If he boxes back foot he will get walked down, Stephen will be champion again when Selby moves on.

I think smith can beat selby he just needs to use his boxing more, he constantly forced things & took to much out of himself but he has good speed & movement & selbys most effective punch was that long right which smith could of slipped if he wasn't so head on, smith can box much better than he did in that fight

I agree that Smith can and has boxed better than he did against Selby. I am not convinced that Smith can 'do'it' v Selby for 12 rounds. Smith is a very technically correct boxer and has excellent balance and coordination. Selby just seems so confident, loose limbed and is natural heavy handed. Selby didn't seem to have to set himself or wind up the punches that did for Smith, or Simpson.

I'm not that happy with how Selby stands over his fallen opponents BUT he does put them down and out. Smith was fantastic at knockng the journeymen out but at title level had to box to points.

Smith seems to have leveled off and I can see Selby maturing to European level.

I hear what you saying but! Smith seemed to fight at a pace which just took out of him as he had no head movement & was straight up in front of selby, coming straight in, he can box superb & seem to prefer brute force as to boxing skills ( which he has in bucket loads) marching & jumping in isn't smiths attributes, he needs to go back to his boxing, great footwork, speed & movement all seem to be irrelevant to him now. Only difficulty now is the manner of the loss, smith could be over cautious in a rematch, It was unsportsmanlike by selby but his emotions would of gone thru roof winning them titles when most thought he had no chance of winning

I'd not seen Selby box before he got Smith and had no opinion on him. I did think that Stephen had been very fortunate to be champion over John Simpson, (I love to watch a well schooled box fighter like Smith but thought Simpson won both).

I am aware of Smiths' amateur pedigree and when he boxes under title level he really does shine. At title level, the extra strength and fitness and sheer gameness of the fella he's facing seems to throw him off. In a word; he's in there with someone wanting and trying to win. Under title level, most didn't want to get shown up or hurt.

I can take on board what you say about Smith and he does seem to have a mature head on his shoulders; good sparring and a while to lick his wounds will have done a lot. Selby though, knocking Simpson out and down a division with a body punch that was not telegraphed and seemed instinctive will have even more confidence that he's the champ.

I expect a very good bout.
