Juan Manuel Marquez?

Post by Datsue »

Now that it's been confirmed he's not going back to lightweight, does anyone know what's up with my man?

I heard Mike Alvarado (not seen enough of him to comment) or Lamont Peterson (who punches wide enough that I could see Marquez winning; the way to beat JMM is to move & make him chase you, which he's never been quite comfortable with).

Two interesting options. Thoughts anyone?

Feck I hope not. I have no desire to see my favourite active boxer chasing around after a faster, taller guy who's fifteen years younger. Jab, jab, jab, shoeshine, 118-110 Khan. Gah. Can't really see why Marquez would do it, anyway, Khan's not going to be earning him that much now Amir is beltless, surely?

Because it'd help get some revenge over Roach and Pacquiao by beating up Khan...I dunno I just don't see him facing Bradley or Peterson personally.

From the boy himself:
“Se habla de muchas combinaciones, pero no hay nada en firme. Me ofrecieron pelear en la Arena Ciudad de México en mayo, y yo les di una respuesta: peleo aquí en el DF, pero se me debe de garantizar la pelea contra Pacquiao, que se dice será hasta noviembre. Pero si me comienzan a dar largas prefiero retirarme".
Translation: “There’s been talks of many combinations but there is nothing firm. They offered me to fight at the Arena in Mexico City in May and I gave them an answer: I’ll fight here in Mexico City but they must guarantee me a fight against Pacquiao, which is said to be in November. But if they start dragging me around I’ll just retire”
“Quieren que pelee en marzo contra el chicano David Díaz en esta capital, aceptaré si en paquete viene la pelea contra Pacquiao. De otro modo no firmaré. No voy a servir de escalón a otros”.
Translation: They want me to fight in March against the chicano David Diaz here in the capital, I’ll accept if in the package it’s included a fight against Pacquiao, otherwise I won’t sign. I won’t be a stepping stone for others."

Good on him. Too many old greats get sold out at the end of their careers.

Morales wants it.

But I'd imagine Lamont Peterson.

marquez probably would do well to retire if he cannot get one last big fight. He's an incredible fighter, but at some point he will lose to someone he would have owned just a few years ago.

I dont think he will get another go at pacman. Sad, I have him 2-1 against Pacman, on my reading of the fights, but his place in the hall is a lock if he never fought again, the man is a machine, a joy to behold, a paragon of boxing skill, guts and bravery.

could be a poor fight, Erik is nowhere near the fighter he was 5 years ago, think it would be an easy win for Marquez.
