Yes that is the truth. Allows you to see how you do against the best of the best. Also meet a lot of good people. Do you have any results that you can share? Most interested in the bouts I mentioned.
Re: 2012 National Silver Gloves Dates,Sites & Results
Navarro dec. Davis, close bout,Davis has speed which gave Navarro some problems but Navarro is really cool and calm,I thought Davis eeked it out but Navarro got the nod
Re: 2012 National Silver Gloves Dates,Sites & Results
Strode vs White was a war! Both are excellent fighters who weren't afraid to let their hands go,very close fight,Strode deservingly got the nod
Re: 2012 National Silver Gloves Dates,Sites & Results
Hernandez vs Williams to me started as though Williams might derail Hernandezs' plan of tying Raushee Warrens record, but Hernandez doesn't really do anything special but he knows how to win,and as the fight wore on,he pulled away but not by much,Hernandez wins his 6th title
Re: 2012 National Silver Gloves Dates,Sites & Results
Machado vs Zavala was a battle,I was very impressed with Machado in his semifinal bout,he reminds me of a Yuriorkis Gamboa clone, hes strong, fast and has cat like reflexes, his only problem is he tries to take you out with every punch.Zavala made Machado miss alot and pay for those mistakes but Machado landed the bigger punches and got the decision
Re: 2012 National Silver Gloves Dates,Sites & Results
Vargas vs Villa was a chess match as you had Vargas(orthodox) against Villa(southpaw).Villa tried to establish his pace of accurate counter punching, but Vargas started to get really aggressive and took Villa out of his game plan a bit.Vargas landed the heavier shots as Villa tried to reestablish his tempo.Vargas got the decision in a close bout

Also,my boxer,6'2 1/2" Suray Mahmutovic(415 BC,San Francisco,Region 8) lost a very very close decision to 4 time National Champion Jose Burgos(Johnson City,Tennessee,Region 6) in the 12/13 yr old 147lb division.Suray only has 13 fights,but I'm very proud of how he performed.He will win a National in the future.

415 thanks for the input. Sounds like I was actually watching these and glad to know that those bouts were what I thought they were going to be. Wow, sounds like some great ones. Hopefully, I'll be able to go next year. Looking forward to watching these seniors at the JOs (some boxed at JOs last year and came back for last year of Silvers. That really is invaluable).
Just in case anyone is curious. Here is a write up I did of the winningest boxers in National Silver Gloves History as Nico does join Raushee as the only boxers in the history (est. 1968) of the tournament to win 6 times:

If anyone has any video of these bouts, please let me know. I'd love to see them.

Hey I have the 14-15 139 lb final on tape (Nate Burkhalter vs Martin Urias), personally I thought that the judges could have given it to Nate Burkhalter but take a look at it and tell me what you think, just wanted an unbiased opinion. . .

Close fight I give it to red corner looked like the better boxer blue corner was more aggressive but it looked sloppy
Re: 2012 National Silver Gloves Dates,Sites & Results
Please remember that the video only shows one point of view - NOT that of all 5 judges - therefore not an accurate depiction of the bout as seen by the judges.Hey I have the 14-15 139 lb final on tape (Nate Burkhalter vs Martin Urias), personally I thought that the judges could have given it to Nate Burkhalter but take a look at it and tell me what you think, just wanted an unbiased opinion. . .

And it's all about scoring blows. Sometimes "sloppy" scores more and "better [looking] boxers" don't score anything.boxmel wrote:Please remember that the video only shows one point of view - NOT that of all 5 judges - therefore not an accurate depiction of the bout as seen by the judges.Hey I have the 14-15 139 lb final on tape (Nate Burkhalter vs Martin Urias), personally I thought that the judges could have given it to Nate Burkhalter but take a look at it and tell me what you think, just wanted an unbiased opinion. . .

Mel, when they give all of you judges "hat cameras" you won't be able to say that anymore. we'll see it all. 8)
Re: 2012 National Silver Gloves Dates,Sites & Results
Ummm - as far as I know, "sloppy" and "better looking boxers" are NOT part of the scoring criteria. And it's all about scoring blows. Sometimes "sloppy" scores more and "better [looking] boxers" don't score anything.
I am NOT going to respond to the above.Mel, when they give all of you judges "hat cameras" you won't be able to say that anymore. we'll see it all. 8)

That is what I was saying. I've seen boxers that have great form and flash but don't score points according to the criteria. I've also seen boxers that do everything wrong, technically speaking - but it works for them and they score points. But many would say they look sloppy. I was giving the same caveat about "judging" who should have won a bout. We are on the same page.
Now about the cameras, it wasn't too long ago that instant replay was laughed at too. The NFL now has umpire cams too. As the cost of using tech goes down, don't be surprised if we add more video to amateur boxing at least for training purposes to improve judging. Could you imagine being able to see from a judges perspective and also be able to see when they pressed the button for a boxer? That would really help judging get more consistent and accurate. A guy can dream, can't he?
Re: 2012 National Silver Gloves Dates,Sites & Results
Yes, we are!We are on the same page
Back when I was a tech, we used to show videos of bouts at the US Championships prior to the tournament so judges would get familiar with the scoring keypad. Don't think that's been done in a long time.don't be surprised if we add more video to amateur boxing at least for training purposes to improve judging.
You would have to have a camera with each judge that would, somehow, show WHAT the judge saw and when he or she pushed the button - and 5 people watching to see when a judge pushed the button and some way to see what the judge saw and when the button was pushed. I honestly don't see that happening - but, yes, you can dream. The biggest advice I can give is that the boxers must stay out of the corners and off the ropes and move in the middle of the ring - that's the best way for three judges to see scoring punches land.Could you imagine being able to see from a judges perspective and also be able to see when they pressed the button for a boxer? That would really help judging get more consistent and accurate. A guy can dream, can't he?

Kullen - How about a camera that moves with the movement of the judges eyes. When they fall asleep (close their eyes for more than a second) the camera too will go dark. When the judge looks down, same thing. When the judge turns to look at something in the crowd or another ring, the camera would too. We would actually see what the judge is seeing!
Yes, technology is moving fast, unfortunately amateur boxing does not keep up with it.
