My top 10 all time heavyweight list

Post by barrack osama »

This is my list. Tell me what you think. I posted this on ESB and I got banned for trolling? What a weird site that is, I thought the whole idea of a forum was to discuss different opinions. Anyway I noticed some names here that I saw there before so this must be a good place to talk boxing. Heres my list.

1. Jack Dempsey
2. Jack Johnson
3. Jim Jeffries
4. Joe Louis
5. John L. Sullivan
6. Muhammad Ali
7. Rocky Marciano
8. Joe Frazier
9. Mike Tyson
10. Wladimir Klitschko

Every fighter you listed there has a very good case for a top 10 position, but i have to be honest, i dont see what criteria you could value highly to place the fighters in this order. I suppose if you are taking a head to head scenario with fighters considered only in the prime of their condition, it isnt that bad.

I do have a hard time seeing Dempsey at the top of the tree, because he simply didnt beat enough good fighters often enough to compare with say a Joe Louis, but many good judges do and it is not a dreadful pick. I really struggle to see Frazier ranking ahead of Foreman (not even on the list) but again quite a few good judges to consider Frazier the better of the two. Wlad above Lewis is another one difficult to justify for me, but again many good judges do see this.

Your placing of Johnson, Jeffries and Sullivan is going to cause a riot here, but the truth is your ranking of these guys is a lot closer to the mark than where many of the critics rank most of these guys.

All in all, i think it is a decent list. Definitely not one that should get you banned for trolling, although if memory serves correct, this wasnt you only controvesial post over there was it?

Awesome list!

Frazier is too low though.

And Clay is too high.

Also, glad you left Holmes off. That bloke couldn't fight at all!

You think Wlad above Lewis is easy to justify?

Wlad is bigger, quicker and technically better plus he's made more defences. It's a real close one but I have Wlad just edging him, plus I think he wins prime for prime.

Dempsey revolutionized boxing more than any other man. I think he beats Louis on footwork alone. People don't understand that everything in boxing starts with the footwork. Frazier was better than Foreman and stops him late if he was in his prime. Foreman was like Valuev his second career, more of a circus attraction, plus 70's George is the most overated heavyweight who ever lived only 2 title defences than lost to Ali in perhaps the stupidest case of ring IQ ever displayed in a ring.

The 3 old timers deserve their place, Sullivan in particular is massively underated today.

In all seriousness, which fighter does not have any case for a top 10 position?

I think too many people on this site underestimate just how many truly great fighters this sport has seen over the years and have difficulty seeing beyond tv's technicolour dreamcoat. I would agree that there are some surprise ommissions, and the order makes it very difficult to evaluate the criteria (if any) that is being used. But the fact remains that every figher listed can be reasonably placed in a top 10. Remembering that these list are all subjective and largely up to the individual.

That list was interesting to say the least, I saw you put Dempsey as #1 because he revolutionized the sport and he did but come on didn't Sullivan, Corbett, Johnson, Tunney, Louis, Ali and others revolutionize just the same and footwork, Alis footwork was alot better than dempseys and so was alot of other fighters, I hope that wasn't your only criteria for having him #1.

The list was bad, i do agree that most of the guys have a claim for the top ten (NOT wlad though) but in all fairness you could put ten otherguys on the list and say exactly the same thing.
