Looks like he could be fighting either Jermain Taylor or Daniel Santos with a few more wins under his belt, this surely good news for the lad.

amazing to think the otis grant fight was 1997. Naz listening to the commentry in new york on adam smith's phone... Ryan's had a tough time since. He's taken his defeats with a lot of class, so it would be nice to see him get a break. It's to his credit he's kept on campaigning all these years on undercards and small hall shows after topping tv bills. A genuine fighter.

I'm with Nick, my man Lockett would destroy Rhodes, plain and simple.
Just wish people took Gary a little more seriously. He has been plagued with injury, and inactivity, and has at times really become disillusioned with the sport. He's a cut above Elcock, Murphey etc (record, chin, amateur pedigree, power, etc). A tear up with Dann would be just what the doctor ordered. Then you'd believe me.

I dont see how you can say he's a cut above Elcock, Murphy, when you look at what the Russian did to him, and to be fair Monaghan should have got the desicion on there first fight. I lost all respect for Lockett when he pulled out against Elcock with a knee problem(then stood ringside jumping up and down shouting for Gavin Rees), then he made an outburst in BN, saying he hurt his leg a week or so before, me and a couple hundred people lost money because of his actions as we could'nt get refunds from SN.JimmyJamJerusalem wrote:I'm with Nick, my man Lockett would destroy Rhodes, plain and simple.

I can't help thinking that RR would have done a lot better in his career if he had not been with Ingle
That house style of theirs suits very few fighters and it gets old very quickly as it depends on reflexes etc.
I never really thought these were RR's strong suit.
Moving to a new trainer is a good start, but it is probably too little too late.
Some good domestic matches could be in the offing and with them some decent paydays. More than that, I can't see

I'm looking forward to seeing Rhodes get back in the domestic picture. He's shown real guts to carry on after some heavy set backs. I can't see Ryan moving up to more than EBU level, though will gladly be proved wrong, but there is nothing wrong with being a domestic level boxer, unless Rhodes can't cope with that stature mentally.
Moving on to Lockett and I would have to pick Gary to bomb Rhodes out sooner or later if they met. Lockett is a thunderous puncher.
I thought he was unlucky against Tsrenko the first time to lose on points, depsite getting busted-up. If you notice, Rhodes and Duran boxed him over 6 rounds, Lockett pulled the short straw and had to box him over 12. A completey different proposition. Gary learned his lesson well and negotiated the rematch to win on points.
He also set the blueprint for Elcock to beat the Russian, which was stay well clear and box from the outside, which Wayne did but almost came unstuck around the 8th or 9th if I remember was in some difficulty.
Yes Lockett again struggled with Monaghan, but in the rematch again lessons were learned and posted a stoppage (even if Monaghan was unhappy with the stoppage). But again, taking Monaghan over 10 rounds as opposed to Elcock's 4 and Murphy's 6 don't offer fair comparison. Gary's doing it the tougher way.
That said, as much as I admire what Lockett brings to the table it's time he put his frustrations behind him and went for the British title and if it means having to earn the opportunity, so be it. Box eliminators, take on highrated contenders etc, but try and get hold of something that his talents deserve.

He looked about 190+ punds when I saw him in the background of Michael Jennings dressing room interview after Vincent fight.
Activity is surely the key. A domestic contender should have had five or six fights this year to get some momentum and hone those skills.
When I saw Lockett versus the admittedly outmatched Chris Nembhard I thought he looked like the dark-horse of the gilded 154 division of 2001.
But his defeat to the European, and the manner of it, dramatically altered my perspective. He looked one dimensional and inflexible.
I hope he can come again, he isn't a young many anymore.
Its now or never.

Of course, I remember seeing Nigel Benn in training after coming back from the Eubank defeat doing all manner of exercises with a medicine ball hanging off his head.Phenomenal-Nutrition wrote:You can train a chin tuck and build neck strength thoughnickd wrote:You cant train a chin though.iron_fist wrote: Rhodes is a new an improved fighter now he is under the carefull supervision of a new trainer and management

There is no comparison between getting excited at ringside, and taking Elcock over 12 rounds. Would you want to fight if you were only at 50% or wouldn't you know?
And if you think Monoghan deserved the decision, I strongly suggest you watch a little closer, and learn to score a fight. Ok so he wasn't convincing, but everybody has a flat performance every now and again, and he still had it by three rounds easy.
Butch is closer the mark, Lockett has always gone the hard route Tsarenko over 12!! Tsarenko comes on strong the longer the fight goes on (he almost KO'd Elcock late), and Gary has comprehensivly beaten ALL of his opponents, including the previously unstoppable world class Kevin Kelly, and Yuri Tsarenko.
Bitching and politics aside. He is a cut above Elcock, and even though they are good friends Gary would dispose of him within 2 rounds. Elcock has no chin.
If he gets thr fights, he will continue to win. Only guy in the UK who could beat him is Eastman, and he's getting beatable.

I have watched the first fight with Monaghan many times I still believe Lockett was lucky, Most off the Sky pundits thought he was also if i remember rightly
The getting excited was not the issue, it was the jumping around on a bad knee that was the problem, dont get me wrong i think Lockett has had a tough time in the past 18 months and he is very dangerous puncher. I still beleive he will struggle against anyone who sticks a jab in his face, to say Elcock has no chin is a bit over the top, he got caught on the temple, he i dont think he had been down before amature or pro, and has learnt the hard way not to take fights as easy touches. The chances of Lockett vs Elcock meeting now they are with different promoters seems very slim. I recon Elcock would want paying up front if they were to meet after the last two cock ups. How does Lockett look weight wise because he always looks massive for a middle.

I agree with alot of what you said, Lockett can look single dimensioned against tricky jabbing types, but that was just the way they trained him at Moorcrofts gym. Since he moved to Brian Hughes, he has been going through a transitional phase, where he has tried to right his earlier failings. He is a potent puncher, and a neat little boxer (European champion ast amateaur). He can make middle easy, he used to kill himself for light middle, but Tsarenko punished him for that.steve richards wrote:I have watched the first fight with Monaghan many times I still believe Lockett was lucky, Most off the Sky pundits thought he was also if i remember rightlyJimmyJamJerusalem wrote:[quote="steve richards I lost all respect for Lockett when he pulled out against Elcock with a knee problem(then stood ringside jumping up and down shouting for Gavin Rees), then he made an outburst in BN, saying he hurt his leg a week or so before.

Elcock will not fight him. He has been offered the fight numerous times.
