Jimmy Young and Muhammad Ali

Post by Homicide Henry »

I saw that fight on an old television special and it seemed to me, despite it being a very boring and not action packed bout, the docile Young won on points.

Ali lost, clearly anyone can tell that Young landed more punches, despite the fact they were soft punches.

Foreman went to the hospital after the Young fight because of dehydration..not a concussion....
..the fight was held in the tropical heat of San Juan ...

Forman was dropped in the final round of that fight It was mostly due to exaustion than from the slapping punches of Jimmy Young...

It was such a torturous ordeal for the big man that he had a religious experiance and dropped out of boxing for ten whole years

That fight could have gone either way, but I had the sence that Jimmy outboxed him that night.

I have been reading your posts Vetteguy and I already respect your opinion. I think I probably give this one to Young by a wider margin though. I really thought Jimmy got robbed.

That’s very kind of you Tomato can. Although their styles differ a little
Chris Byrd seems to have that same uncanny ability to fight when he wants to fight during a round. Sometimes Jimmy Young would just casually walk  away causing his opponent to lose his rhythm. He was fun to watch for sure.

Young not only won that fight, he made a fool of Ali.

There was a stretch of time when Young was beating all those big wild swinging punchers.....Foreman and Shaver are two I think of off hand, but with Ali he outsmarted the guy who usually makes HIS opponent look bad.

The stretch didn't last long, but while it did I think Young was as good as any heavyweight around
