Watch it all unfold post Euros with the sudden retrospective wisdom -

- He's too pally with the players

It'll happen. When McLaren began, his 'Stevie G'-isms were supposedly a breath of fresh air. Soon as results went tits up we apparently needed discipline. All hail Capello. He takes no crap, just what we need. Then the World Cup debacle and seemingly it's no wonder as morale was low as he treated kept the players cooped up in camp, the evil authoritarian.

The players aren't good enough. And neither is our 'Arry.

england team managers job is an impossible task. the manager needs to be the guy in control and the fa will never allow this. so even before the jobs been given out you are either getting a yes man or someone who is prepared to compromise their principles. are there any good english managers out there? i think there are only 2 or 3 in the prem at the moment and none of them have ever won anything much better than the johnsons paint trophy...so it looks like a filthy foreigner again! anyway they are never gonny win anything, the players are always overrated, under performing, and usually seem to lack intelligence, or guile, discipline etc.
in the end tho , theyve got to keep trying som they should go for someone with balls, integrity ,immune to criticism, hard case, international experience and a winner at the highest level...who speaks english!...alec ferguson. ha ha ha.

Surely it has to be F rank Warren.....hear me out.

He could engineer Englands entry into a tournament called something arbitrary like Cup of the World for Real Champions and invite heavyweight names from around the world - China, India, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Singapore - and the ensuing victory would lead England to be heralded as champions of the world. A series of friendlies could be lined up as world title defences - take your pick from opponents around the world - Chad, Liechtenstein, Guam, etc - as England go on a 16 match unbeaten run.

And with the players contracted to clubs, he wouldn't need to worry about finding money to pay them!

He's be no worse than Steve McLaren was.

You don't have to be a great league manager to be a great internationsl manager.

and oddly enough, Harry Redknapp is the most successful english manager in the premiership.

Football League Division Three: 1986–87
Football League Trophy: 1983–84
West Ham United
UEFA Intertoto Cup: 1999
Portsmouth
Football League Division One: 2002–03
FA Cup: 2007-08

rather sad when you look at it really, that no other english manager has got a better record

Roy Hodgson & Steve McLaren have won top flight domestic titles and cups so i'd say they have been more successful

I don't know much about the game, but I liked how fit the S. Koreans were under Hiddink in 2002. Curbishley always seemed like a decent enough bloke (if Johnny Foreigner's out).

I totally disagree with the 'overworked' view. Being active for longer leading up to tournaments shouldn't be a problem for any injury-free player under the age of 30. Stirling Moss used to enter 50+ races a year; dangerous ones. Daley Thompson famously trained on Christmas Day. Old pro footballers had day jobs. The talent's there, but in general modern footballers' attitudes stink. Dives and tantrums are regular. I'd love to see Army members or pro athletes brought in to embarrass the team's fitness. A bit of humility would go a long way.

Not that every player's underfit and arrogant, o' course. Overpaid, for sure.

As I said in the OT forum thread on this, it doesn't matter who the manager is, the problem is we've got a bunch of arrogant tossers massively lacking in skill and passion who seem to think they'll turn up and win and if a strict disciplinarian such as Capello can't kick them into touch then what hope does anyone else have?

Yep, there are already stories that the England players are not happy that they weren't consulted on where they should be based for the Euro's.

This comes after Wales players were also not happy about not being consulted as to who should be the Wales manager.

Since when were the players "consulted" on all this stuff ?

I heard bellamy i think on the radio complaining that the senior players weren't consulted on the new wales manager, basically whinging because they didn't get their own way. Top flight footy nowadays winds me right up, Im an everton fan but I'm being drawn to finding a non-league team to follow, purely because its actual footy, not a bunch of prima donnas rolling round on the floor when someone goes near them and constanly whining about being hard done to.

Having been involved for 18 years with local football, I've called it a day. The young players now are so hard to get to turn up for training, motivating them is harder and harder.

Some of the lads will work hard, and help out.
But over the last few years its gotten worse. So no more for me, I think the way pro footballers carry on does have an effect will young park footballers.

Or I've just become bitter !

Completely agree, I ran a team for a few years and some of the egos (for no reason whatsoever) of the players was unbelievable. Everyone thinks they've got a god given right to play now

like it. the bankers are finally getting a whiff of public anger, and are, hopefully, about to suffer having to be brought down a peg or two. as i watched rangers getting taken into administration , what amazed me was all the two bob players(most of whom would struggle in the english second division) driving away from the training ground in their hugely expensive bling motors. for sure footballers, and agents etc are bankrupting the clubs and the fans in much the same way as the financial institutions, getting paid ridiculous sums of money, for doing either very little, or worse, causing damage to the Game.
another thing....who the fornicate are standard chartered to start giving morality lectures to liverpool fc

Player power is a joke but it's been heading that way for a while.

Remember when Rio Ferdinand was banned for missing a drugs test? The England team were due to play Turkey away in a qualifier when the ban was announced by the FA. The players, led by Gary Neville threatened to strike and forfeit the game if I remember correctly! Sven talked them into not going through with it.

The last truly great manager from this country was still alive and kicking at the time, and when 'Ol Big Ead' was asked how he would have dealt with that his reply was to have sacked the 22 out in Turkey at the time, ending their international careers and flown another 22 out immediately who wanted to play!

Since when has representing the country been a right? It's the same with all this captaincy nonsense. John Terry and other recent captains see it as their job, a role designed for them. Eff off you ego maniac wankers! Mere custodians and effing shite ones at that as proved by the recent tournament debacles.
